Why go thru all that trouble? Go spend $4 on a can of WD , it will take the cosmo off of everything metal and wood, and youll have enough left over for your next 10 mosins
Then clean the bore like any other rifle

Thanks for all the quick replies! Luckily the cosmo isnt that thick on the stock. I have a steamer that I can use. No heatgun or blow dryer. Ill try the steamer first then the sun.
Im also thinking of going to home depot to buy a PVC tube with an end cap and fill it with hot water and simple green and let the barrel soak in that things for a good 30 min to help the bore and receiver. Does that sound like a good idea?

I used a black plastic trash bag, stripped rifle stock, baking soda & and summer hot barn roof.
You take the rifle stock & coat it with the baking soda then place in bag on roof of barn in the summer time. It has to be a barn, seriously.
The baking soda soaks up the cosmoline that leaches out during the heat of summer. I left mine on the roof for about a week. Wipe off the cosmoline impregnated baking soda and you are good to go."duck the femocrats" Originally posted by M76

When you use soap and water its really hard to get the water out of allthe nooks n crannies n metal, hence it starts to rust...water on wood will make it swell up then shrink, possibly warping the wood...what the military uses is diesel fuel on everything andit works great , though the smell is god awful for a few months...Ive found using automotive brake cleaner and a toothbrush works sweet and its pressurized to get into spots you just cant reach, dries very fast and the odor goes away after a few days...Comment

Wait till July and lay the rifle on your dashboard for a few days in the summer sun with the windows rolled up. You'll be amazed at how much cosmoline will leak out, and your car will smell like a milsurp forever!!NRA Life Member - CRPA Life Member - NRA Certified RSO - USN Veteran
I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

We've had success using a heat gun.

I did the PVC bit for the receiver and barrel cosmo removal. A 2' piece, I think 3" in diametre with an endcap. About $4 total at the hardware store. A good wipe down whilst looking in the nooks and crannies for any crystalised laying about. Have fun with your new BoomStick!Wtb: Lee-Enfield .22lr Trainer, Mk V ~ Jungle Carbine or an Ishapore L2A1

Okay. Well if its around $4 for a PVC tube I think I will do that for the barrel and receiver which I can use in the future and then use my steamer for the wood and slowly work it out. It's not very sunny right now and I don't want my car smelling like mil surp as much as I love mil surp rifles
I watch chromefreak on YouTube and he used a steamer for the wood. I'll try this method first.
I appreciate all the feedback about this.Comment

Okay so today I started to work on the wood. I started using the steamer carefully and it was okay at getting some of the cosmoline out. Then I tried to use ballistol. I applied ballistol to a spot an took a paper towel to it an woah! The cosmoline came right off. Better than the steam. Is using ballistol a good idea for the finish or am I harming the finish? Right now it looks okay.Comment
