Just got my mosin! Cosmoline question

I just got my first mosin nagant from AIM Surplus. Loving my 03FFL. I was cleaning the small parts with simple green and hot water. Works good enough and I have a question on wood. Tried to use the search but couldn't find anything.

What is the easiest way to remove cosmoline on wood?

UV light works too if u got one laying around
Otherwise just throw it in the yard and let the sun soak it up
      Remember to tan both sides

Heat gun or sunlight. Blowdryer might work.

An old SKS I used to have I cranked the oven up and pulled up a chair and would rotisserie it in the heat and wipe it clean as the cosmo would bubble out. Heat is your friend.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Becareful of the heatgun it may ruin the original finish and cause it to crack.

Once you have wiped away the majority, use a blow dryer or heat gun to to get the rest out. Be careful not to scorch the wood with the heat gun. Some wood areas, like the wrist, seem to weep cosmo from some mysterious never ending source.

Ive heard of putting it in a black trash bag for an hour at a time. Each hour go and take it out and wipe it down. As for the small parts in the bolt, i put mine in mineral spirits. Took the cosmo right off.

Have fun with the mosin OP!!

I set mine on top of the pellet stove for a couple night, it bled right out. Was definitely a little tight putting the receiver back in, but overall it worked nicely.

I did it both ways and it works. Next time I'll just leave it out and forget about it for a while.

Hah thats a fast 12 replies

Ive found that WD-40 and paper towel is the best, cheapest and least odorous way to get cosmo off a shellacked stock. Very benign on the finish

Heat gun if the cosmo is really thick

Thanks for all the quick replies! Luckily the cosmo isnt that thick on the stock. I have a steamer that I can use. No heatgun or blow dryer. Ill try the steamer first then the sun.

Im also thinking of going to home depot to buy a PVC tube with an end cap and fill it with hot water and simple green and let the barrel soak in that things for a good 30 min to help the bore and receiver. Does that sound like a good idea?
