    cmp garand-do they need work?

I am waiting for a service grade CMP garand, should get it later this month. Do I need to take it to a gunsmith to check it out? Or can I just go straight to the range and start blasting away? I know they had all kinds of waivers to say they don't guarantee the condition it is in etc etc

Take it apart, clean it, lube it, reassemble, go shooting.

Just as with any surplus firearm you should completely dissasemble the rifle ,clean and properly grease it before firing

Any suggestions on grease to use? I was looking at getting this for my garand I received a couple months ago.

No need to buy small tubes of so called high tech gun grease
ANY good quality wheel bearing grease is overkill for the Garand

If you are really hardcore and want to check everything (which I am actually planning on doing with the HRAs I'm getting, needed or not), read:

M1 Garand Part Inspection. This tutorial will walk you through the steps needed to check the serviceability of your rifle.

My service grade came looking amazing. i use engine assembly grease, anything works. a little oil too, to get into places the grease cant and help for corrosion protection.

If it rotates, oil it; if it slides, grease it. Any quality grease (I use moly grease on mine) and gun oil will do.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

You might get an extra op rod spring. It is the first thing to wear out. If you have feed or ejecting issues replacing the op rod spring usually cures it.

After you shoot it, if your CMP shoots Minute of Barn get a new CMP stock.

My Greek went from Minute of Barn to 3 MOA or so on the used barrel.

I figured a $45 trigger job would have cut 1 MOA off of that but I sold it because I already had a Danish and a NMA Garand.

This is what the cheaper NMA John C Garand like mine will do with good surplus ammo & look like 200 yds prone & sling:

Of course your shooting skill may vary
Spreading the WORD according to COLT. and Smith, Wesson, Ruger, HK, Sig, High Standard, Browning

The HRA I just got from them needs a trigger job, a NM front sight, and the rear sight tuned up. The creep on the second stage is unbearable.

I picked up a field grade Garand from the CMP, and had a couple minor problems. Did some internet searches, replaced the op rod spring and the clip latch spring and I haven't had any problems since. So I had a couple of minor tweaks to work out, but didn't mind. It was a puzzle to solve.
