    Scope on a mosin

    Hi all,
I've received my c&r last weekend and will be ordering a mosin on friday, so my question is, would adding a scope (one of the no-drill ones) be blasphemy?
The gun has a lot of history, but I'm sure the one I'm getting won't be a safe queen, I plan on shooting it until I can get a nice rem 700 or similar.

One of the no drill ones wouldn't be blasphemy, it's reversible.

It's your gun but... could you at least try the factory sights before scoping it?
Military iron sights tend to be pretty good.

get a good scope mount the goes in place of the rear iron sight. that way the next owner can put it back and keep it original. they will ban all imports of military surplus guns someday. bank on it. thanks stupid voters.

I put a mount that replaces the rear sight on my Mosin. I have put scoped or dots on many of my rifles just because I can't see very well anymore, and I am left eye dominant. With the scope at least I have a chance of hitting something. I did keep the old sight parts (they fit nicely into an old pill bottle) and labeled them for future use if needed.

I agree with NOTABIKER. Stupid voters have decided to damage the country's economy, prosperity, and reduce our freedoms.

The mounts that bolt on in place of the rear ladder sight do not make permanent alterations to the rifle. It can always be put back.

The advantages of the Scout mount set up is that you can see very easily around the scope. If you're hunting, this is good. If you're target shooting, this is not useful, but having the scope far from your eye does not in any way affect accuracy. It does, however, prevent that neat half moon scar above the shooting eye some rifle shooters wear...

My eyes are old, so I'm more accurate using scopes.

Most of the mounts that replace the rear sight ladder suck. I bought one and it was a joke. couldnt even snug it down without bending it. Just poor design. So I just pulled the 2 pins on the sight block and took the whole piece off. There is a small 3/8 dovetail underneath. Get yourself some good 3/8 scope rings and a long eye relief scope and your set. Dont keep it in the safe SHOOT it!

It uses a standard PU side mount, so yes (unless your rifle already has a PU mount).

FWIW... i would wait to scope a mosin until you find one that is worth scoping. Mosins tend to multiply in your gun safe. Trust me, this won't be your last one. Get your hands on a few, find one that groups well and then scope that one... if you still feel the need to scope it.

Don't worry, not only will I spend some time researching scopes and setups, [thanks everyone for the info on those by the way], but I would also like to learn to shoot iron sights correctly before scoping.

Great advice, I hadn't thought of that I guess there may be a crate of them in my future, keep a couple, sell the rest.

By that time I may have a nice new bolt action and keep all the mosins original, with their irons.
