Shooting a Garand with hunting ammo

What must be done to shoot regular Win, Rem, etc, hunting ammo out of a Garand?

Also, is there any surplus 30'06 military ammo left?

I would not suggest doing that, until you read everything here:

CMP has the proper surplus ammo to use. Installing an adjustable gas valve(the proper name excapes me just now) will also let you tune the rifle for other ammo. OR you can handload to get the proper ammo for it. The rifles was designed around IMR4895 powder. I load 47gr of IMR4895 and a 150gr bullet which is close to the original load.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

        Schuster adjustable gas plug

and CMP has tons of surplus, but, can FMJ ammo be used for hunting?

Schuster gas block is the adjustable one I believe.

It looks like Prvi is now offering Garand specific 30-06 which should be a great substitute. I've shot a ton of their M80 ball through the M1A, while is does not group that well, It is fairly clean, non magnetic and the brass is really easy to work with.
If I were to hunt with the M1, I would think a 165gr Sierra or 168gr Barnes over about 47gr of 4895 would do the trick.

I have loaded up 150 gr Hornady FMJ infront of 47gr of imr4895 using the HXP brass. I ordered some 168 Hornady Match HP yesterday to try.

Funny that this subject appears. I was just yesterday looking into a Schuster adjustable gas plug. I was just comparing prices between Midway and Brownell's. Midway by about $2.00 cheaper. Need to compare shipping.

There is some surplus left, but nothing fantastic.

Plenty of cheap korean stuff but I havent heard good things about it. I blew through some, But didn't feed it through a Garand.

Greek can be found, but it's not exactly cheap if you're looking for cheap.

Thanks for the info guys. What about .308 Garands? Is this a special "tanker's Garand," or can 30'06 rifles be converted?

Converting a Garand to .308 is as easy as having the barrel replaced. All the other parts stay the same.

A "tanker" Garand is different. That's where the barrel is shortened and a few other parts have to be modified.

Well, I just ordered that Schuster adjustable gas plug from Midway. Saved a whopping $3.39 compared to Brownell's...WoooWhooo! Don't mistake Brownell's as not good to buy from. I do purchase from them from time to time. Mostly Gunsmithing items. By having an account with Brownell's you can save a little bit but, believe me you need to shop around for a better price in todays economy.

Why would you even try it? Even those gas plugs are suspect. Just buy ammo from CMP. I've seen some Korean 30 06 on the market too.
