    UPDATE: SKS wont cycle rounds

Ok, bought this Yugo sks took it to the range and every few rounds it wouldn't cycle the round and the bolt would lock up. Took it to get professionally cleaned thinking it was just really gunky from the previous owner. Went to the range again and the same results.

Is this a gas system problem? Ammo problem? Im using Tula 122 Gr fmj steel case.

gas switch is in the right spot and the spring is in correctly as well.

    any ideas

    thanks for your help

Best guess is this will fix it:

Yugo 59/66 gas issues are when, not if. Still great guns.

        Here's another one. Less expensive.

CNC Warrior Yugo SKS Gas Valve

I have only used Murray's, which as it says is slightly oversized.

              They are easy to install.

I had one that was the piston and tube causing an issue. If it is not the valve, the cylinder that the piston is in under the handguard could be worn out.

Before you try any expensive fixes it may be something simpler.

If its a yugo sks it probably had a grenade launcher sight and attatchment. If you can lift up the grenade launcher sight them the button that directs the gasses into the piston is in the wrong position (facing up). This is so the grenade launcher can be used effectively with blank rounds (I believe). When the grenade launcher sight is down that button can be pushed in and tilted to the right locking the grenade sight down. This is the semi-auto firing position.

                  Hope that fixes it

...just read that post again...if it is in the correct position you should try to sweat the grease out. SKS's are generally reliable firearms so I'm surprisedthat if it was proffesionally cleaned that you were not made aware of any problems with parts that could affect functionality.

                    thats what I was thinking.

I may just get this gas vale that was mentioned above and if that does not fix the problem I am at a loss to why it wont work. Maybe the price of $275 was to good to be true.

This is a very common problem with this rifles. Not so much that they all do it but the majority of the guns that display your problem are because of too much gas getting around the piston. I have used Murray's piston and it is nice and tight. It will not just drop in the hole, you have to make sure it is nice and straight and then it will slide in with little to no wiggle room whatsoever.

One quick fix that I have tried is to put a piece of wire or real thin solder around where the gas tube goes onto the gas port where that piston is. This will provide a temporary seal and will typically give you better operation if not fix the thing. This is to be used as a band aid or a means to diagnose your failure. When in doubt, you could always do what I did the first time, put your hand over the gas port area and pull the trigger!!! Be ready for a very rude awakening because they dump a ton of hot gas right around the piston. Needless to say, I only pulled that dumb stunt once but it made a believer out of me.

well well what do we have here? O so a Yugo 59/66 is having gas tube problems? What a shock. You wonder why I troll on that POS.

Should have just bought any other type of SKS and you wouldn't have this problem.

Any way here some ways to fix it from the SKSforums. http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php?topic=4191.0

Read through the whole thing and hopefully it has a solution to your problem.

ok I read the thread on sks boards.. I dont really want to do this paper clip trick, so I bought the CNC warrior gas valve and spring. Im gonna try this out and ill let you know how it went.

ok so I bought a new gas valve and that didnt seem to fix the problem. What could be the issue. Is there a more powerful round that would add more force to opening the bolt?
Should I get a new gas tube or a piston?

Plug the chamber (not with a round) and blow or shoot compressed air into barrel and see where the leak is
