And that, folks, is why even Axis Powers didn't dare invade Switzerland. Not even the Soviets were ready to take on that country chock-full of sharpshooters. I like that the women shoot, too, and that's still true to this day.

The krauts could have used 5 year old airpower and bombed the Swiss civilian population to death. Would they have? No doubt, if they wished.
The Swiss military's plan for invasion by other powers was to leave for the hills and let the civilian population get looted and reorganized.
A few thousand folks, no matter how well dressed, would not have stopped any invasion with 7.5 bolts.

There's more to it than that. The "National Redoubt" defense plan was sound, the Swiss could not possibly hold the German mechanized forces in the low lands. By falling back into the highlands, they ensured Germany's air and armored power were neutralized. Also, prior to the fall of France, the Swiss had entered into an agreement with the allies. Its true that the Swiss "played both sides", but they did so with the knowledge and consent of "the good guys" The Swiss also served as the homebase for the OSS (early CIA). They saved hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees when other countries, the US included, failed to act on the behalf of the Jews. But Paul there is a much more Complex reason why the Germans didn't invade CH and you better believe those K31 bolts along with the terrain and Switzerland's awesome defense network had something to do with it

Great pictures! I was at the rifle range today here in SoCal and most of the guys were shooting AR15's of one kind or another, and they were mostly using the bench. The women were dressed to impress as well, but their sense of style is a little different. Most of the guys were casually dressed as well. Of course everyone was wearing hearing and eye protection. The Wehrmacht didnt invade switzerland because they had other priorities. Simple as that. If they'd wrapped up Russia and England they would've eventually gotten around to it.
Fetishizing Swiss marksmanship and their great rifles doesnt change this.
The Germans have always looked down their noses at the Swiss as being a sparcely populated rural backwater with a laughable dialect, kind of like how parts of the US look down at the South or West Virginia or whatever. As shown by the intell gleaned from the SS and German Army after the war, there were something like 13 plans to invade Switzerland even up to 1945. Those same intell reports suggested that although they would most certainly succeed, the costs would be prohibitive. They examined how the Finns mauled the Soviets and kept putting it off.
Glenn, you are correct that their failure to defeat the Russians was a factor. It was a bit more complex than that. I had the pleasure of living their and working with some of their defense planners. They were under no illusions as to their ability to defend against a sustained assault by a vastly greater force, but they, like the Finns, intended to make it a very costly assault with no pacification prospects.
I also had the pleasure of seeing their current readiness (well, as of 30 years ago), and shot against these citizen-soldiers. They still dress well for rifle practice (including the occasional fedora).
