Because of the knowledgable collectors on board here, I was hoping I could pick your brains as to what exactly I have in my collection here. I'm pretty new to C&R, but would like to learn more about what I have!

M-1 Garand. Recent CMP purchase.
Requested WWII S/N and hoped for GI stock. Got both! (Aug 1944 SN).

This scope mount looks like it was designed for the 1903A3, is it military or civilian manufacture?
The scope I presume is civilian?
I have no details on the background of this rifle.

The reciever is stamped off set like you said, but if it was origionally an A4, why is it stamped "MODEL 03-A3"?
The finish on the redfield scope mount seems to match the rifle, did redfield make mounts for the military? And anyone have any info on that scope?

I'm no expert on the 03-A4, but I do know the receiver is stamped correctly.
They all were.The reciever is stamped off set like you said, but if it was origionally an A4, why is it stamped "MODEL 03-A3"?

The hole in the receiver ring left side on the 03A4 is a gas relief port in the event of a case failure. The stock has a stamp from Rock Island Arsenal showing that at least the stock and possibly the rifle went through an arsenal overhaul/rebuild. The stock was sanded and tru-oiled by a civilian owner to get the gloss finish. The M1 rifle went through a rebuild post WW2 evidenced by the 1955 dated barrel, HRA bolt, and DoD stamp on the stock. There may be an ectropen scribed marking on the receiver legs with the arsenal and date if it was done in the 60s.

Oh yes that is a real 03-A4 the roll marks are only offset for the A4 snipers. According to The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle by Joe Poyer.
M1903A4 Remington Production 1st bock serials 3,407,088-3,427,087 they were stocked with springfield-made "C" stocks marked "S" in the magazine cutoff recess.
2nd block June 1943 4,000,001-4,015,000 some were "Z" prefixed.
3rd block 4,992,001-4,999,045 the last A4 rifles left the Remington Arms line in June 1944 stocks were marked "S" or "K"
From what I can see of your serial number looks like yours is a 1st production M1903A4 sniper rifle. Definitely a keeper.Last edited by Mg911guy; 10-20-2012, 7:44 PM.
