How do those sight shim things work? You mentioned you jerry-rigged some for your Finn rifles?

The notches on the rear sight base of most any ladder-sighted Milsurp are going to have pretty big steps between them... for example, the M96 Swedish Mauser rear sight has settings for 300 (the lowest), 400, 500 & 600 Meters. If the target is at 550, you would have to set the sight on 500 or 600 and then hold off the target enough to make it work, which is not very precise.

With the shim set, you do not even move the slider on the rear sight, you just lift the ladder up, set the correct shim in place on the sight base, and drop the ladder back down on the shim. The shim holds the ladder up the proper amount and then you can hold the correct sight picture on the target and shoot more accurately. The set includes shims for 350, 400, 450, 500, 550, plus there are 5 brass shims of varying thickness that can be used to fine tune the setting, so for example you can stack a 350 Meter shim and either the .011" or the .022" shim and be all set for the Sac Valley Turkeys at 385 Meters.

I made some simple shims out of brass stock to use on my Finnish Mosins with Konovalov rear sights, since the adjustment of the sight is around 150 meters per notch. It allowed me to shoot with the correct sight picture instead of holding on the top or bottom of the target board in the long distance match.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

Oooohhhhh, that all makes sense. Thanks.

I always did wonder why Swede/Finn rifles had so much space in between the distances compared to like 98 Mausers and 91/30 Mosins and such (where they're all marked off with the same amount of distance in between).
