a peice of World War two history I never heard of

Has anyone else heard of Wojtek? Apparently he was a Brown bear fighting for the Polish military, who was even on the battlefield carrying ammunition for the soldiers of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps. In the different sites I have read about him, he was even enlisted as a private in order to get him on a British transport ship.

Here are some articles about him, I really want to believe this.

"a local boy found a bear cub near Hamadan, Iran. He sold it to the soldiers of the Polish Army stationed nearby for a couple of canned meat tins. As the bear was less than a year old, he initially had problems swallowing and was fed with condensed milk from an emptied vodka bottle. The bear was fed with fruits, marmalade, honey and syrup, and was often rewarded with beer, which became his favourite drink. He also enjoyed smoking and eating cigarettes."

Like any soldier, he loved to relax with a cigarette and a bottle of beer when out of the firing line. But in the heat of battle, he became an inspiring figure - bravely passing ammunition along to supply the guns. Now there could be a memorial to Voytek the bear

"On one occasion, Voytek was delighted to find the door ajar. Entering the bear discovered a cowering Arab who had come to spy out the lie of the land for a raiding party, intending to steal all the weapons and ammunition."

Never heard of the bear, but I have heard of the decorated Red Army soldier Kuznechik, who was wounded three times and served from Stalingrad to Berlin.

I've read about him before. I believe they used him to help pull artillery shells to the guns. Also, he serves in multiple theaters in the war, as you said, he needed to be enlisted as a solider to get transported.

Another set of stories I like from the war are the L4 (Piper Cub) pilots who'd spot for artillery. One guy strapped several bazookas under his plane's wings and had cables leading into the cockpit. He'd line up on a panzer and yank the cords, letting lose a salvo of 6 rockets at the tank... heard he even killed a few.
Another guy was credited with 2 air to air kills on the Luftwaffe. When attacked by a couple German fighters, he ducked low into the treeline and used his plane's pathetic speed to outmaneuver the enemy fighters which crashed into the trees. Not bad for a unarmed airplane!

Sounds like he may have had the most interesting life of any bear who ever lived.

Do anyone here know how the "Winnie the Poo" stories started?

Once upon a time, back in World War I..............

Pullnshoot25 (before he got banned) was the one that pointed this story out to me several years ago. Everything I have found seems to point to the fact that it is legit.

Pretty cool story but what happens if the troops run out of food?

I wonder who gets eaten first?
