Usually these later garands have original barrels. Mines a 5.8M with an original barrel.

I'm now looking hard at the CMP Special (.308) Special Grade M1 Garand.
I'm trying to justify spending an extra $350 to get the 308 that I want.
But then again the new wood and barrel throws a twist into things.

Sent an overnight order for two of the 6 million SN guns on the 10th. Fedex internet site says it got there at 10:30 AM on the 11th. I talked to a salesman at the Alabama store and was told the line was around the block when they opened for only 25 rifles per store! He told me to go ahead and order them, but put a second choice on the form. He also told me the Service Grade Springfield Armory Garands mostly had new stocks, but both those and the HRAs were nice rifles. I ordered the SAs for the new stock as a second choice. I am not holding out a lot of hope for the 6 mil guns. I used my debit card to pay for them and I don't see them being charged yet. Oh well.

I would not hold my breath on that 2-3 year time frame. If the sitting POTUS wins reelection, you will see that number slashed dramatically. My advice is get a few large safes and max out your annual limit. When the CMP sells out, you will be golden.

What he said. I bought my first U.S. RIFLE CAL .30 M1 through the DCM when it was one for lifetime and it took over a year to get it. Sure glad things has changed when the CMP tool over rifle sales.
