I would never take the chance on a mail order Field Grade. Many are in need or a rebarrle and beat up cracked wood.
You can roll the dice and take a chance, some get decent Field Grades but the odds are against you. For just alittle more you are gauranteed and good shooter with the Service Grade
The WRA garands are $100 more becuase you are paying for the name. Not as many made ,its all supply and demand

You gotta have at least three right? (so you can use the stacking swivel things!) I have two now and am thinking about ordering a third. Especially since I noted the RIDICULOUSLY overpriced M1's at the Big reno gun show... Jeeeezus $1,000+ for total beaters!?!?!
The service grade i just got looks almost as good as my Special grade- It has what looks like a NEW walnut stock on it that looks like someone whacked a few times with a chain.... The dents are minor and all the same shape/size. hmmm, Kinda reminded me of intentionally "distressed" furniture or hardwood floors.... I wonder if theyre doing that to differentiate the "specials" from the new stocked service grades??

I am so pissed at myself for not getting at least one carbine while they were available- again the the gun show, there was not one less than 1200...

I have been oiling the wood on my garand, and it is looking very nice. I can remember my brother getting a m1 carbine for $20 from the nra. Don't ask what I paid for mine....LOL

Sounds like I'll play it safe and go with a service grade. WRA Garands only differ in name?

If not, it's not an original stock (not that that's bad).

The circle-P is the firing proof ("Yes, we really did shoot this gun before it left the factory, and it's good") and the cartouche -- crossed cannons, a box with three stars above an eagle holding three arrows, or a box with some letters, indicating an arsenal overhaul -- indicate that it was accepted by the government or refurbished by a government arsenal.

That looks like the replacement birch stock that they're putting on the service grades. It's a shooter.

So, what's the best shooter, M1 or M1A?
