    Lipstick on a pig..

So a few weeks ago, my neighbor brought over this old Ward's Western Field .22, that someone had hacked the end off the barrel.

So being the nice Guy that he is, MrNiceGuy recrowned the barrel. I cleaned up the stock & put on a couple coats of BLO. Used some fine steel wool to knock down the rust. Then it dawned on me about the front sight being gone! In discussing the problem with my neighbor, he said "what about a scope?" I was able to locate a mount from Brownells & scope/rings from Midway. So for just under $100, Joe said "Yes" We will go sight it in Sunday. (I did test it w/ dummy ammo to make sure the firing pin made a good strike)

In a few weeks, when he has time, Joe wants to try the stripping & cold-bluing process himself.
So for now we have to settle for some lipstick on this pig..

Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.

very nice bruce if I may ask how much was it to blue yourself ?how hard was it to reblue? Reason I ask is I bought a old rem single shot 12 g from a friend a while back but for what ever reason he took the bluing off . I got a quote from the local gunsmith and they wanted close to $200 on a 80$ shotgun
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

Judging by the stock design, the heavy barrel, and the holes in the receiver for a peep sight, looks like someone did a real number on what may have been a nice target rifle. Seems odd for a "Wards" but there it is!

          Looks like a nice save.

You will never, in your life, have a chance like this again.
If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.

I don't think $200 is a bad price, but not on an gun like you describe. I used one of the Birchwood-Casey kits that sell for about $20. I've done 3 or 4 guns with the same kit. Directions are pretty good. I've gotton fair results. And with these old guns that aren't worth a lot, the results are kinda neat as the process doesn't come out perfect (for me), but still gives the gun a lot of character IMO. I have posted other pics in the Gunsmithing Forum.

Yes, the Mossberg model 45 or 45a might be a bit more precise, but the Mossbergs 40-46 all had the same round receivers & 1-5/8" spacing for scope mount holes. The Mount was made by Havlin. Numrich price was about $25.

When I was looking at the pics I thought, wow, the action looks just like my 46. I love my old Mossberg, with iron sights you can pick off clay pigeons at 125 yards all day long.

With a scope that thing will be nice..... Good looking work too by the way!
