This is why no gunsmiths want to deal with Mosins. Your worried about $50 to buy the tools to do it yourself. How are you going to feel when you get a bill for much more then that from the gunsmith?
Dealing with customers that generally are going to complain about a few bucks when you could have customers that are happy you can do a good job on their $1K+ gun is a no brainer.
Sorry no offense but there is always the other side of the story.
Just shoot the gun as is. I have a few Mosins and like them as they are. Get yourself a nice cheap .22 if the recoil of x54r is bothering you. 22lr is about all I shoot anymore. Fun,cheap, painless.Join the NRA today!Comment

That is why I bought it. I actually bought it before I needed it because it was a good price. It came with the cutter, handle, and a .30 cal pilot. Sat on the bench for about 6 months before I decided to do something with it.Comment

i know a gunsmith that WILL work on mosins. hes based out of his house. his name is Bill Byrd, and hes based out o his house in San Bernardino. just google search Byrds gunsmithing and youll find his address and numberWow so i called in january....everyone was three months out...i call 3 months later no one is even taking new jobs they r so backlogged...call today and its the same thing...so the only gunsmith around taking new jobs wont work on mosins.....why? Because there not worth it ....thats what independence armory told me...well how about f*** u and do the the work, im paying for it.....i swear to god i have never met so many gun people and stores that will do anything they can NOT to take ur money....whos it not worth it to? If i wana to pay u to do it....than its worth it to me......
i dont get this whole "its not worth it, its just a mosin....well im sorry i cant afford a $3k ar10. if u would like to give me one and then shut up, i will happily accept it. I guess i think the opposite of everyone..my mosin is a great gun, as r most mosins....so to me its a great cheap starting point to do stuff too....ur telling me u would rather buy a gun forth 1k and then put another 1k into it, than buy a mosin for $100 and put $300 or so in and have it the way u want....i would rather modify something cheap and risk nothing than start with a base gun of $1k and start spending more to get it the way i want.
So anyone no a gunsmith that is accepting new work and work on mosins? I no its a tall order....1937 S/42 P.08 Luger

Pipe cutter to shorten it, it's gonna take a while but it'll be straighter than a band saw.
You can recrown it with a dremel tool but go slow and be careful.
You can get a threading die from brownell's for a screw on muzzlebrake.
I had a friend with a machine shop do mine, it doesn't have to be a "gunsmith"
It's only metal, you can outhink it. If you deside to DIY, just take your time and go slow . . . no alcohol allowedComment

I enjoy threads like this
Why is it ok to spend $1K customizing a $700 colt but not ok to spend $300 to an inexpensive rifle?
Find a machine shop to do the work
or...
Do it yourself - just go slow
It will be a great learning experience
I own a sporterized Mosin and a sporterized Mauser
I always love to hear the ignorant "purist" collectors try to say that I have "destroyed" a piece of history - without asking the facts
I started both projects with firearms that had already been cut up or bubba'd
(Hopefully you are doing the same - if not make sure that you DONT have a rare model)
Both rifles were in real sad shape and now are excellent shooters
I also own several orginal C&R rifles and pistols
Bottom line is...
Its your firearm and your money - have funThose who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Don't use a pipe cutter on a rifle... It causes a pinch/burr that will have to be counterboared to remove
I like butchering mosins.... But its hard to get smiths to work on them because the owners tend to be cheapskates and the rifles are made out of steel that is redoculoisly hard on toolingComment

NEG, Still shoot a little 20ga once in awhile? Working on a project gun you might like...
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.
