any gunsmiths around who will actually accept new jobs

Wow so i called in january....everyone was three months out...i call 3 months later no one is even taking new jobs they r so backlogged...call today and its the same thing...so the only gunsmith around taking new jobs wont work on mosins.....why? Because there not worth it ....thats what independence armory told me...well how about f*** u and do the the work, im paying for it.....i swear to god i have never met so many gun people and stores that will do anything they can NOT to take ur money....whos it not worth it to? If i wana to pay u to do it....than its worth it to me......

i dont get this whole "its not worth it, its just a mosin....well im sorry i cant afford a $3k ar10. if u would like to give me one and then shut up, i will happily accept it. I guess i think the opposite of everyone..my mosin is a great gun, as r most mosins....so to me its a great cheap starting point to do stuff too....ur telling me u would rather buy a gun forth 1k and then put another 1k into it, than buy a mosin for $100 and put $300 or so in and have it the way u want....i would rather modify something cheap and risk nothing than start with a base gun of $1k and start spending more to get it the way i want.

So anyone no a gunsmith that is accepting new work and work on mosins? I no its a tall order....

I know it is a bit of a distance but, I would highly recommend KENDOG4570 (Ken Breda). He is in Aptos. Just south of Santa Cruz.

If it is nothing that will cause a safety issue, I'd suggest trying it yourself. If you mess up, you can always get another Mosin, and what you learn will be valuable in the future.

He is right on this. If you are to tell us on this forum what you need a gunsmith for concerning your Mosin, many folks here can probably guide you through. They are very easy to work on.

Shortage of gunsmiths? Sounds like I need to think about a career move

What do mean by re-threading it? You would be paying more for the work to be done than what the rifle is worth. To bubba a Mosin of any kind is against the law of collectors.

If you want a shorter version of a 91/30, why not just buy an M44. You should be able to find a decent one for around $200-$250.

I love how everyones opinion is to not spend more than the gun costs on accessories ....who ever came up with that....so if you have a $1500 optic, it has to be on $2k+ gun.....its gona do what an optic does, it doesnt care what gun its on. I think i got a break because i didnt have to spend that kinda of money on the gun, i can spend it on stuff for the gun...does it go reverse too? If u have a $2k+ gun u cant put a $100 optic on it???? It wont perform well????

                        the work you want...

                        barrel chop---bandsaw and reamer tool
                        crown--dremel and time
thread it??? what do you want a brake or something?? if so buy a break, figure the thread size and match it for the barrel, weld? then use a wire feed.

if you do it your self you can gain experience and enjoy the work.

tool cost should be relatively easy

I respect what you are saying. An M44 or M38 would work. And as I as a collector do shoot my weapons. Alot of others here do shoot them as well. Again, what do you want threaded? The muzzle? Maybe to experiment on a home made "sound suppressor or brake" perhaps?
