DJ, Swedes only come in 6.5x55 which is a wicked round. I just wish they made a 98 action in that caliber. May have to put one together some day...

Honestly, in terms of actions---the 98 trumps all the previous Mauser designs.

And just FYI Pete, I want to say that DWM=Ludwig Loewe.
You are correct sir, some are marked Lowe, later ones are marked DWM. I think that's why my Brazilian 1908 (DWM) has a star of david on the stock but I'm not 100% sure.

    From Wikipedia:
Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktien-Gesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions public limited company), known as DWM, was an arms company in Imperial Germany created in 1896 when Ludwig Loewe & Company united its weapons and ammunition production facilities within one company. In 1896 Loewe founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken with a munitions plant in Karlsruhe (Baden), formerly Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik Lorenz, and the weapons plant in Berlin. Shares that Loewe had in other gun- and ammunition plants were transferred to DWM. This included Waffenfabrik Mauser, Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre (FN) in Belgium and Waffen- und Munitionsfabrik A.G. in Budapest. The DWM was orchestrated by Isidor Loewe (1848–1910), as his brother Ludwig had died in 1886. The Loewe family was of Jewish descent. Karl Maybach (who was part of the Maybach company) was employed by the Loewe company in 1901.

8mm is the only readily available surplus, most of the 6.5mm, 7mm and 7.65 dried up years ago. Shoot what you have and enjoy it. With a barrel that nice, it should last a long long time.

Yup! Other calibers sounds great, but must wait until the future. Thanks for your input and helpful info. I sure hope I'm shooting her 10 years from now.

It will be fine, just clean it really good if you plan to use any corrosive ammo. I would invest in a press and a few sets of dies, the 8mm surplus will eventually dry up. Even 7.62x54 won't be around forever but it may outlast most of us...

I've got one of those, but it wasn't trifled with by the Russians. Lord knows where it was for sixty years, but it's in great shape.

That's a beautiful rifle aklon! Some of them made it through a little less harshly then others. I don't know why they scrubbed my rear sight base, its like a freaking mirror.

can anybody give me a link to where I can possible find some dies? I already got a progressive.

Looks beautifu, if your looking for one with 'more history' check the sale forum here on calguns, and the sale forums at forums.gunboards.com, k98kforum.com, and surplusrifleforum.com, there are always a few for sale on each of those forums. Good luck my friend. Also if you have any gun shows near.you hit those up, treasures ALWAYS pop up, not saying at every show, pop they are out there.

Buy and fit a brownells wide/tall front post sight and open up notch/rear sight, polish the firing pin, tune the trigger, handload, bring it out to a 100/200 or furthor distance range and learn how to use the sights.

Very good replica of the original K98 sling. I have a couple and they are well worth the $20 they get for them.

                      Nice rifle!
Thanks for the link, I think I will pick one up.

Have you locked up your bolt yet while messing with it outside of the rifle?

Yes, I am learning its not a Russian capture at all. Czechs scrubbed them clean, and I guess felt generous enough to leave the sight hood.
