So what do you guys think?

Czechoslovakian Brno German k98 Mauser, captured by the damn Russians.
First Mauser, and love her. Any input or recommendations? Is there a better Mauser out there for me to blow money on, because this thing is making me hate my Mosins I used to hold so dear.

    scrubbed clean....

Anybody know a place where I can a decently priced bayonet, cleaning rod, and sling? Thanks

    here ya go ;D

      Gorgeous stock!

Better Mauser? Better for what? I have a Swede M1938 that shoots better than my 2 K98's. I think my Israeli rework K98 gets the battle history points. I have a 1944 RC from Gustloff Werkes that may or may not have seen much combat, is a serious mismatch, but has like new bore & action and shoots almost as well as the Swede.

So it depends what you want from the Mauser.

+1 for the Swedes, but there are many many to consider
classicarms.us carries repro sight hoods and cleaning rods, as for a bayonet maybe look at ebay (i had good luck there). be sure that your rifle will accept a sight hood. the earlier (pre 39 maybe?) ones were not set up to.

I'm looking for everything you could consider better.
I would love a more "collectible" version, which from what I'm learning is a German with more markings left. On the other hand, accuracy is always something I'm looking for, while staying in 8mm cartridge.

I have a sight hood, put her on after I got the sights pointing in the right direction. Let me tell you, this is the nicest bore I have ever seen on a mil-surp rifle. Looks new.... I will try and get some pictures.

Where can you find a swede in 8x57?

Swedes are small ring actions and were not designed for the high pressure cartridges, they only came in 6.5x55. South American mauser 95s came in 7x57 and 7.65x53 and were originally made in Germany by Mauser, DWM, Lowe ect.

As far as quality is concerned, Czeck VZ.24 rifles are excellent if you can find one that's not too pitted or shot out. Mine is a beater with a fair condition barrel but will ring steel as good as anything else I have. GEW 98s and South American contract rifles are also excellent but tend to shoot over a foot high at 100 yds as the first graduation on the sight is 300 meters. They need a taller front sight blade. A lot of the Brazilian, Argentine and Peruvian 95s and 98s were made by Lowe and DWM. Chilean 98s were made by Steyr, Awesome craftsmanship on all of them.
My M38 Swedes will shoot better than my eyes will allow, even with standard Prvi ammo. The 6.5x55 Swedes are fine rifles and still available in great condition but you have to load conservative.

                            Czech vz.24s are SMOOOOOOOTH...

DJ, Swedes only come in 6.5x55 which is a wicked round. I just wish they made a 98 action in that caliber. May have to put one together some day...

Honestly, in terms of actions---the 98 trumps all the previous Mauser designs.

And just FYI Pete, I want to say that DWM=Ludwig Loewe.

Alternative cartridges sound great, but as of now at least, I'm limited on my resources of ammunition and big bucks for expensive ammo. To be honest with you, this information is educating me, but it still sounds like a foreign language, as I am still a newbie to Mauser heaven! Thanks for all your input! I will take a look at my options.
