No, berdan brass can be reloaded. It's just a bit more complicated...

No idea, and frankly it doesn't matter to me. I would rather pay a little more for shipping (if it is more), than give an anti-CA business any money.

      Correct, for all practical purposes.

Berdan primers can be reloaded, but the primers are not readily available, and decapping is much more difficult.

Awesome steer. Thx. I just ordered a box, as well as some of that linked 7.62 that they have. Slim pickings in that caliber as surplus goes out there in the world.

          Meh... They're out there.

Graf & Sons, the reloading authority, has a wide selection of reloading supplies, shooting supplies, ammo and more.

The problem is that the diameter is not the same as boxer type primers, so they don't feed well in some priming systems, and they are complicated to decap. That being said, some people claim that the berdan priming system is more precise than boxer and can potentially produce better accuracy.

There are some youtube tutorials online about how to deprime berdan brass but (in a nutshell) the easiest way is to remove the decapping pin from your sizing die and fill the case with water. Since a liquid cannot compress, the pressure forces the primer out. Neeless to say, this will be an outdoor activity.

RCBS also makes a berdan decapping system but from all accounts, its a PITA to use.

Suffice it to say that you might want to buy a few thousand Berdan primers, and stockpile your spent berdan brass, just in case we have another "ammo craze" and components dry up but honestly, it's probably more trouble than it's worth, at this point.

Big time. There are Berdan primers available from Tulammo, but if I had to go through all that effort to decap Berdan-primed cases, i'd just use the ball-bearing-swaging trick and convert 'em to Boxer. Folks reloading .303 Brit or 8x57 Mauser are currently facing this issue, since the cheap milsurp's pretty much dried up. I know that someday I'll be facing it with the Mosin.

Fortunately, Prvi Partizan makes reasonably priced, brand-spankin-new, Boxer/brass .30-06, .303 Brit, and 7.62x54R ammo, plus several others. The brass is getting good reviews for its longevity. My solution for the Mosin was to just pick up some of that.

As a followup, I placed an order with Samco Global as I posted above a couple of weeks ago. Bought just one box of .30-06 and a small qty of the Porto 7.62. Figured I would try them out at a low dollar amount and check their quality/service.

Uploaded the drivers license and statement via their web upload form. Placed the order via their cart... standard issue usual online drill.

And nothing. Just got off the phone with a woman who, while nice and polite, was barely computer literate, telling me that in order to get my order confirmation to "go back and look at your computer". this after I was told they don't send email confirmations. But then after some extra "are you sure about that?" type talk, yes it turns out she meant email.

No email received. No record of my order. Apparently lost my drivers license/liability statement ... uploaded using their own tools... I'm thinking that I'm better off just walking away from these guys. A shame, too. Your mileage may vary.

I ordered something from them once and remembered thinking that the person on the phone was a bit slow.

Could be worse, though... Call Sarco sometime!

                Me: "Do you have _______?"
Them: "I don't know. Let me tranfer you to _______." (in snarky Jersey accent)

I'm halfway glad they don't sell C&Rs to California anymore. Keeps me from having to deal with the morons that work there.
