    Recommend a .357 magnum C&R pistol

    I was thinking S&W model 19, or S&W 66? Suggest some 6 shot medium frame .357 revolver.

S&W 686. For some reason, everyone that has ever shot this gun seems to shoot it better than any other gun. Plus it is great looking, and holds it value like a gold bar.

I dont think the the 586 or 686 are C&R. It has to be C&R for me to consider it.

Original Ruger Blackhawk. Love that action! The first ones came out in 1957-1958...
Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

I'd look for an original Colt "357" or the model that it became, the "Old Model" Trooper. They have an excellent balance and fit, and many of them (I think ALL "357"s) are C&R. I prefer the 6" but that is because I used to use it for deer from a tree stand back East.

These guns use almost all Python parts, but used to go for a fraction of the cost of a Python. Hard to find in CA, easier in other parts of the country. I got my "357" in upstate NYS. Also had a .22 LR "Old Model" Trooper 4" at one time. It had been a trainer for the Florida State Police. A Colt collector talked me out of it (actually it was his money that talked....).

A Ruger "Flat Top" .357 Blackhawk is also an excellent choice if you like SA. Hard to find; worth finding.

            Get the original - a S&W .357 Magnum (also known as a pre-27; the 27 'no-dash' guns are C&R).

I will second the S&W M-27. They are beautiful guns, and you would have the choice of at least five barrel lengths. Not at all cheap though.

If you have the money Smith & Wesson Registered Magnums are another way.
Very first magnums produced by S&W.
Magnums started around 1935 if not mistaken.
I like the old Colt trooper and the S&W M27. Wouldn't mind having either one.
                Good Luck

Reno Cabelas had a S&W 'Registered Magnum' that was C&R (it was a few grand) but I would also say the M27 or a 'Highway Patrolman' if those count, some of the easiest to shoot .357's, and the triggers are gorgeous.

Colt Three Five Seven is my pick.
                      Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

My no dash Model 28 Highway Patrolman is an awesome piece. Made in 1958 and never carried:

Just shot someone's original S&W Highway Patrolman this last Saturday. My understanding is that this is basically the same as the original N-frame S&W 357 Magnum from 1935, but with a 4" bbl. If so, see if you can get one of those, though they're pretty much collector's items now for high dollar. Those who have spoken well of them are correct.

Haven't ever shot a Colt from that era. Apparently there aren't too many of those left.

And yes, the 586/686 are definitely well out of the C&R arena. Those didn't come out until the 1980's.

EDIT: Just saw the preceding post. Apparently Highway Patrolmen did also come w/ 6" or 6.5" bbls. Nice piece there, Heatseeker!

Model 28 is the same as the Model 27 but with a matte finish and no checkering on the top strap...designed as a less expensive model but otherwise identical.

Neither are medium frame, which was OP's original question.
