No, I wouldn't put Soviet M/Ns up there. While they were effective during WW2, they were outdated compared to other bolt action rifles of the time.

My list of the best bolt action battle rifles of WW2 (the top 3):

      1. Lee-Enfield No.4, Mk.1. It has a ten round mag, extremely fast bolt, rugged, and easy to use, easy to acquire sights.

For the other two, it's sort of a toss-up between an Arisaka type 99 and the 03-A3. Both have the mauser action, easy to use and acquire sights, they are both reliable, and the type 99 has one of the strongest actions of any of the WW2 bolt rifles. The type 99 also has a chrome bore.

The K98 isn't in my top three due to it's sights. If it doesn't have a sight hood, it's easy for the front sight blade to get "lost" depending on how the sun is hitting it. Also, the tiny rear notch annoys me.

well those are good choices. So lucky you didn't say Mosins...hehe I didn't want to hurt you any way

Yeah I like the 03 action...however I can't agree on the type 99. I shot one before all lubed up...ehhh just wasn't impressed however it was the strongest action out of all the major players in ww2 so points for that.

So what would I say is the best all around bolt action?

          Easy:

And MosinNagant9130 even agrees for pretty much the same reason. Hard to argue against great battle sights, 10 round capacity, and a slick bolt. Also, the gun balances well and looks awesome.

And yes, the Mauser's weakest point are its sights. Though if you get a tall front blade, they don't suck as much, believe it or not. One thing I hate about all Mausers is what happens if you tighten the action screws too much, where the bolt doesn't move. These are the only guns that do that.

I would assume that 6.5x55 Swd has a ballistic advantage over 7.5x55 Swiss. Therefore, I want to see a 6.5x55 Chambered K-31 or G-1911 duke it out against an M-96 or M-38. Then we can see which gun is superior.

FWIW, I dont like the M-96 action in that its cock on closing--not as smooth as my Enfield's, for example.

Another point in favor of the LE that I forgot to mention...different length buttstocks were offered depending on the size of the soldier.

hmmm haven't shot an Einfield but I have handled one and I must say the bolt is very smooth. Hows the recoil on it?

Better than then Mauser's or K-31.

                Not too bad, IMO.

                  This,^^

The recoil is rather gentle compared to a K98 or a 91/30.

Same price as most K-31s, so under $300.

However no cheap ammo for them. And I dont use crap-a-stani...

The big advantage the Enfield has over the other WWII era bolt action rifles is a ten round mag. In addition due to the configuration of the bolt and it's proximity to the shooting hand the bolt can be quickly and smoothly operated.

I remember reading somewhere that during one battle during WWI German troops came under long range volley fire and had to take cover because they thought they were being fired upon by machine gun fire. As it turned out it was British troops their Enfields and firing as fast as they could.

They usually go for $200-$300. I paid $275 for mine a couple of years ago, it's a 1948 Fazakerley with a mint bore. It's quite the shooter.
