    New To Muzzle Loading.....

I ordered the Traditions Trapper .50 Percussion pistol. It should ship Monday.

I ran down to my local ammo store to grab the necessary accessories(Discount Shooter), but they didn't have much. I bought #11 caps and some Hodgdon's FFg(they didn't have FFFg). I was just wondering where you guys buy your lead round balls and patches(for the cheapest price). I am looking for .490 balls with .015 patches. I also need a flask and adjustable powder measure.

Track of the Wolf has the Hornady ammo for $12/box of 100, but its also $10 shipping. Amazon has most of the other accessories I need, but if they are all available elsewhere(in one location for cheaper), I would consider it.

    Thanks in advance.

Helps to know what city you are in. I have a box of Hornady .490 that was only opened to size check.
With all this "gun control" talk, I've not heard one politician say how they plan on taking guns from criminals, just law abiding Citizens.

        Sacramento Area(Roseville).

My buddy used to rent a house that backed up to Gibson Ranch. I know they have reenactments there(or used to). Not sure where else.

I like Track of the Wolf and Dixie's for odds and ends, but for the balls I like Graf's since they have good prices and flat rate 4.95 shipping.

ncwa.org - February 25, School of the Soldier (1 day event) - Gibson Ranch

Gibson Ranch in the Sacramento area is the site of a one-day
School of the Soldier on Saturday February 25th. The event will
include a barbeque, drill, and some other activities. Time and other
details to follow. Included will be an opportunity to get your safety
tests out of the way for the season. So let's plan on showing up
for some fun, comradeship, and getting ready for the coming
                reenacting season.
I'd like to check this out, but I may be out shooting my new pistol instead. Gonna try and squeeze in both. Thanks for the recommendations so far.

My next purchase will probably be the hawken rifle to pair with the pistol. The kits are cheap(er), but I don't know if I am ready to build. All I see is dollar signs flying away.

Are you open to casting your own?
If so, I've always liked Lee round ball molds.

Patch material: I've always used blue striped pillow ticking. It mic's a little under .020", and is available at most household fabric stores. Midway also carries precut ones fairly cheaply.

If you buy pillow ticking by the yard, you can either precut it (for my .45's I use an 1" arch punch chucked in a drill/mill, with plywood as a base), or you can cut it off at the muzzle with a sharp patch knife, after the ball is started with a short starter

Not against it at all(I'd actually prefer it).....but where would I get enough lead to cast my own? I used to have access when I was a metal framer(we did lots of x-ray room builds with lead sheet rock).

I think I have everything I need to shoot now, except for patches:
pistol, round balls, powder, flask, pistol measure(5g-40g), & caps.

I also picked up a nipple tool, and am looking around for a good nipple to use with these #11 caps.

Thanks again for all the info and links. Keep it coming!

Have you tried Wild Sports in Orangevale? Don't know how much BP stuff they have but they're the only store in the region (that I know of) that keeps a good stock of reloading supplies. Decent prices too.

You can make your own patches. Joann's Fabrics sells #40 Drill Cloth which may also be found elsewhere. after that you just need to lube and cut the patches. Back in the old days guys used to spit on the patches. Now a days people use things like TC bore butter.

Round balls. check out lee precision.com you can get a .490 mold pretty cheap get a ladel too. As for the lead. You can get a box on ebay. here is a link for 20lbs. for around 30.00 now price may be ok. but can you imagine how many round balls you can make with that.

I believe Midway sells lead ingots too. Some tackle stores have lead ingots for folks who make their own sinkers....particularly salmon trollers. I use firewood rounds as targets sometimes then split the rounds and recover the lead and re-smelt it.
