Well I don't have a confession but I do have a "praise report" (Christianese for something good happened)

A while back I found an M38 Mosin Nagant here on Calguns that had been slightly bubba'd.
Kid listed it as in great condition, sporter stock, ati bent bolt, but it included the original m38 stock, and original bolt. Missing rear sight but 240 rounds thrown in.
I think he wanted $220 or obo.

We pm and I agree to meet him that night for 200 cash.
We meet and this is what I see:
The original m38 stock is actually a M44 stock, oh well didn't think I could be that lucky.
I look at the rifle and notice that it has been tapped for a scope mount.
So at that point of course I want him to come down a bit because of the holes that where not disclosed.

He wont budge at all.. we haggle for like 20 minutes he wont come down a penny. Finally I start to walk and he goes down to 190.

Get home put it back in its rightful stock and put the original bolt back in. Much better!
I then sold the sporter stock for like 50 bucks
And the bolt for 75 I think
So I made back 125 bucks not bad..
I had to get a rear sight which took a while to track down but only cost me about 25 bucks
Then I found 2 small set screws that I loctited in (most people would never notice I'm sure you all would)

I've had a 1917 eddystone for about a year that i have yet to shoot. i always bring my 1903 and m1, i just pass on that 17 every time. also, not c&r, i have an amd pistol, and ak74 featureless that i built that i have yet to test fire, 2 years, 7 months respectively. I also have 96/11, not shot, but that is much newer. oh and an m14 i just put together, man i need to make a road trip out to the desert.

Oh, and my confession - I was offered a muzzleloader a year ago. Rusty thing, looked like it was missing pieces. Passed. Got into muzzleloading, was offered it again. It looked like it was missing pieces because it's an underhammer pistol! And while it has surface rust the bore was beautiful after the spider webs were cleared out. (Literal spider webs - I think they sealed it up and protected it). I cleaned off the rust and it appears to work great. Replaced the nipple just in case. If the ramrod arrives early enough tomorrow and if it isn't too rainy I'll shoot it, otherwise it will have to wait a while.

You guys are definitely making me feel better, at least I'm not as bad as some comparatively. When I get over this cold I'll make an effort to do my penance and leave one of my usuals at home and take the Mosin at least. I bought it to find out what all the buzz is about that's surrounding them, maybe that's why I haven't shot it yet. I'm afraid to get Mosinitis. Which would probably put me over the edge considering I already have Garanditis, Sigitis, Carbine Syndrome, BRD & BFD along with a few other gun associated sicknesses. Not to mention I want to catch Black Powder Syndrome, but I know I've been putting off getting one for that specific reason. What can I say, I have an addictive personality.

Black powder opens up a world of possibility if you like cool old guns. Even if the big cloud of smoke doesn't appeal to you - there are just so many possibilities and designs from hundreds of years. It's remarkable.

What can I say, I'm a sick sick man.


That's the thing about black powder, the old school style, the history, the big puff of smoke, ramming the charge and whatnot, all that appeals to me. There's just two things holding me back from getting into black powder right now. 1. I don't know anyone personally to show me the ropes. 2. Money.

What I'd really like to do is buy one and learn the basics then build up a kit myself.

1. There seem to be informal black powder groups everywhere. Here it's at the Chabot Gun Range in Castro Valley once a month. I'm not sure about Sacramento.
2. If you keep an eye on Cabelas they have tremendous sales on black powder revolvers. Look for something like an 1858 reproduction by Pietta, steel frame. With some coupons and free shipping I got one for $180ish, no joke. Cap and ball revolvers are pretty simple, and you can find good YouTube videos showing how to load them. Then once you get the hang of that you can decide if you would like to get a single shot pistol or a rifle or whatever, and if you want to stick with percussion for a while or go right to flint.

I'm in a boat similar to the OP. Ive had my "new" Rusky SKS for almost 48 hours now and after fully disassembling & cleaning it i've only now finally gotten to the range to break her in.

Thought I'd let you all know I finally took the Mosin out yesterday. All I have to say is, I understand now. Awesome rifle, and the kick wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. It will be making more trips to the range that's for sure. Also, my shooting friend, who had never handled a Mosin, liked it a lot. He was shocked to hear how inexpensive they were and said he'll have to look into them after a few other things on his purchase list are taken care of.

The unfortunate thing was that my target was great at 50yds, but looked like it got hit by a shotgun @ 100yds. Still fun though.

As to accuracy, get more practice with the rifle. Also, mosins are ammo picky, you might have to shoot a few different types before you find a load it really likes.

I have quite a few I haven't shot either. Problem is I spend more time at the gun shop and in the Marketplace section of this forum than I do at the range. I'm not too worried though, this will give me something to do when I retire MANY years from now.

I have a confession to make here, just needed to get it off my chest. I have owned my only Mosin Nagant, a hex receiver made in late 30's, for about 2 years now and I've never shot it. Thing is I don't know why. I want to shoot it, it's my only MN, I have ammo for it, a whole spam cans worth sitting there amongst all my other ammo. I've gone to the range many times since I bought it and cleaned it up, so it's not like I haven't had the chance to shoot it. It's just I've just reached for other things in the safe when heading to the range.

But that's not the end of it, I also have a late model K31 that I've never shot. I don't feel as bad though about that because it's not my only K31. It's just that when I do grab the 7.5 ammo, I grab the one rifle and not the other. They sit side by side in the safe so it's not like I'd have to dig further for one than the other.

Does this make me a bad person? Any way I can atone for my sins? Anybody else have a confession they want to get off their chest?

Well, it seems you wanted to collect and have a part of history, more than you wanted to fire it.

Nothing wrong with that, and at least you restored it to a ready condition should you ever want to shoot it.

If and when that days comes, it will be because it is what YOU want to do.

Forgive me Calguns for I have sinned, I totally have the OP beat. I have 6 c&r's that I haven't shot yet cause Iono how. I just clean them and stare cause I think they're pretty. I'll learn to shoot rifles someday soon. I've only been shooting for less than a year and feel more comfortable with my handguns. Plus I have no firearm enthusiast friends to go to the range with to teach me how. :/
