I paid $89 + tax & DROS for mine, in a nice M38 stock, but counterbored.

Of course, that was about 6 years ago. Good luck finding that now.

I paid 180 at Big 5 (they were not on sale and I was just getting into collecting and didnt know better at the time) and I still think it was the best purchase I ever mad, that rifle will be one of the last ones I sell.

Nagant registered his design, and then made a big stink to the world that supposedly his design was ripped off (it wasn't), and Russia wanted to use Nagant for a contract for revolvers. So they paid him a lump sum of royalty fees, and then purchased the Nagant revolvers for officers.

Made arrangements to pick up an M38 for $160 in Sacramento from a seller in the Market Place.
Two days before picking it up, he called and had to back out and said he was not sure if he would sell in the future.
Probably found out he could get more for it, or had a better deal from someone else.

                I got very disappointed.
But meh, that's life, there's plenty of M38's out there and it's not like it's an M1 Carbine or anything.

The first is $225 + shipping. It is in overall excellent condition, with all stamped matcing numbers (no electropenciling or line-outs) with the Cyrillic letters prefix on all numbered parts. The bore is bright, clean, and shiny with good sharp rifling and a slight counter-bore (this is common on M38s). All visible parts are correctly Izhevsk marked. Bluing is around 100%.

It is in an original condition, very early 1944, M44 laminated birch stock that was originally made without the wrist crossbolt and had one added later in 1944. The stock has it's WW2 finish and has not been refinished/refurbished like many Mosins one sees that have been aggressively sanded and slathered with a thick and sloppy coat of post-war refurb shellac.

It has an earlier TG import mark on the barrel and only a small and not real visible importer added serial number on the receiver - no big, butt-ugly, rough as a cheese grater "billboard" import mark jack hammered into the receiver like some of the more recently imported rifles. It comes with cleaning rod, khaki colored Soviet Mosin dog collar sling, oiler, and ammo pouch.

The other one is $400 + shipping. It's in nice, as issued, condition. All stamped matching numbers with Cyrillic prefixes, no line-outs or e.p.'ed numbers. Nice bore with no counterbore. Early small and discrete Century import mark on barrel and inoffensive translation of original serial number stamped on receiver; again, no crappy and ugly billboard. Stock is original WW2 condition and finish laminated beech (rare, rare, rare) M38 stock with no added wrist crossbolt.

Comes with scarce and desirable original WW2 Mosin carbine sling, cleaning rod, ammo pouch, and oiler.
