Matt Damon aside, that is one of the greatest movies of all time. There are only two movies that make me teary eyed every time I watch them, Saving Private Ryan, and Letters from Iwo Jima. That one part where the German comes down the stairs and just looks at Upham with utter contempt, both knowing that he could have helped Melish, but did nothing out of cowardice, that gives me the chills. The way the German looks at him like "You're not even worth killing." Plus the last line from Tom Hanks, "Earn this." Damn. Brilliant.

I usually call that movie "Leave After the Beach Scene".

Not a single person in the crowd is rational or reachable because the parade's for gay folks and it's in SF.

I think it's more of "you don't bother me, I won't bother you (the way he avoids shoulder brush coming down the stairs) And I better find out where the real danger is so I can stay alive" BTW, what did he said to Melish before he killed him.

He said: "Shhhhhhh" while putting his hand over his mouth.

That scene is one of the hardest for me to see--it really demonstrates the personal nature of war....

Interesting no one mentioned "We Were Soldiers", maybe shouldn't talk about it in this forum until 2025.

I bought the book from Amazon.com (it's called "With the Old Breed" by E. B. Sledge) and it is a really good book. The writer was in the Marines, involved in the front line battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. He wrote the book after the war, based on notes of his experiences he wrote/hid in his bible during the war. You really sense the honesty in the writing which shows the misery, survival, horror, fear in war and courage/commitment to be there to help his buddies in the fox hole.
With the Old Breed is a great book. I'd highly recommend it. It is also one of the source texts that is being used for the new Band of Brothers Pacific project .
