The crossed cannons or the US Ordance department acceptance stamp, the punch marks are to confirm the heat treated parts, the other letters are manufacturer codes. It looks correct and unmolested to me. There are a lot of carbines out there but not a lot that escaped the rebuild/update programs.

You have a very nice carbine there!

Thank you very much for the info

I assumed this but wasn't sure with it being so old. I was hoping there would be a C&R thing on the ammo too but I guess not.

I was going to post pics of the ammo but I'll have to find something else to do with it now.

          Thanks again for the info

              Cool, thanks for the info

So I guess it's looking like this is the gun that was issued to him with the ammo. (I'll have to check the dates on the ammo now)

I am even more proud and excited to have this now. I had no idea it was considered a collectors piece. This will stay with my family forever if it's up to me.

Thanks for all the input guys

                    Matt,
It looks like you have yourself a winner.............Congrats.
After WWII, the Ordnance Department ordered that all "Type 1" barrel bands and flip sights be replaced with type 3 barrel bands with bayonet lugs and adjustable rear sights.

                      Hi Jim

Great info, so I guess this is the rifle that was issued to my Great Grandfather during WW2. (along with the ammo for it that still has his info and the round info on it, I wish I could keep it.......) It's amazing to know this now, I assumed it at the time I received the items but now it's cool to know that this is the rifle and ammo he fought with.

Thanks for the info Jim, and everyone else for the replies

Something doen't seem right it has all the early features except it has the flip saftey instead of the push button. The true early models that weren't touched had all 3 features no bayo lug, flip sight and push button safety. The safety was changed because they would mistake it for the mag release or vice versa when under fire.
