Ok, the gun is nice enough, but you still behaved like a troll. I am not impressed with that. And if you paid $500 too much for that, I am not impressed with that either. It isn't in "near mint" condidion. That rear sight is aftermarket. And judging from the way the letters on the word "SAFE" are slightly more washed out towards the bottom, there is a good chance that the gun has been reblued. A very good job, but still not original. Now, had you not played games with us, I would say "nice gun, good job." But with the lead up and your deliberately trollish first post on this thread, about all you get is a "Meh, that's an ok gun." It is nice enough for a Remington 81. But not worth the drooling and deliberate ommission of what it was that you gave to taunt people.

Being the C&R nitpicker I am, I have to agree. It's a nice rifle, but not near mint.Ok, the gun is nice enough, but you still behaved like a troll. I am not impressed with that. Like his post was? He had to try very hard to write that first post without telling us what he got. That was trollish. To the Nth degree. That annoys the heck out of me. So he gets a barely civil response. He is lucky more people didn't whip out the barbeque sauce and roast him for that kind of behavior.

Not really. A troll is typically one who spends all their time online pursuing experiences vicariously through the very real actions of others, inciting vitriol and misanthropic castigation at every turn, out of disdain for their own lack of understanding (and usually without much point in their trolling) while never actually partaking in the very thing for which they spend most of their time arm-chairing and pontificating.
They usually have very little knowledge on the very topic for which they have spouted, living within a realm of silicon-chips and endless sea of LED pixels, all for gratuitous mental-masturbation, to a day-in and day-out orchestra of tip-tapping at keys on a keyboard, the only "real" they will ever know. They will then chum the waters with snide remarks over an innocuous post, and expect no rebuttal.
Wasn't trying to impress anyone; I think I made that clear by the very title of the thread; quite the opposite as I was being self-deprecating and humble, admitting my dubious purchase. This was self-acknowledged, true, even with all of the "only-one-known-to-exists" and other rare exceptions in my collection(s). While this rifle is exceptional in condition with an action and barrel that are more "new" than most anyone will ever find at the price I paid, even though I feel I paid $500 higher than its worth (yes, the bluing is genuine; like your Avatar, you need new glasses) granted I knew up front its faults, before even considering the purchase.
But to think I was trying to impress YOU? What impresses me is how highly you think of yourself. Well that's good I must say. I believe everyone should have a good self-esteem, and I commend you for that triumph over your own composition.
Even though the very subject by my hand, of this very thread, commented on that expectation up front? Your astute observational abilities are uncanny...
How astute of you again; and how did you deduce that? Might it have been where I stated quite clearly and succinctly with full indication, leaving little room for doubt, in BOTH of my posts prior to yours, "...even with the added sight (correct for the time, and actually very nice adjustable sights) and recoil pad added.
To be more clear, and allow you the benefit of living vicariously through my ownership of this rifle (by the way... where are the photos of yours?) as it was something I was fully aware of prior to even considering purchasing this rifle, it is a Lyman adjustable sight and a Hawkins recoil pad, both from 1936, the same year the rifle was made and first year of the Model 81's production. The rifle has a 3 digit serial number, which has esoteric meaning to me, with an added provenance for which I have no inclination to reveal - just know that "it's good". ( You would be impressed.) Remington made 56,091 of this model; it has a 3 digit serial number. That's cool all by itself without the provenance.
And about the PERSON whom may have put those sights on there? Would YOU change a custom Smith set up by Elmer Keith or a customized Single Action Army set up by Ed McGivern if you got your hands on one? But hey, it's not original, right.
You like to judge, yes, I've noticed. But now you are just being silly. You have grasped all of this from a poor online half/faded photo with a slight reflection and gun oil filling the letters. I can assure you, the roll-marks are deep, and the bluing rich but enveloping - like you will never know as you can't see it in person. I supposed I could have shown the other side of the receiver, but that might have been too much for you.
See above. Yet, I have the advantage of actually owning the gun; holding it, looking at it up close, inspecting it, and very soon - shooting it. You will never have that luxury will you? So your next best effort is to say "I bet those grapes are sour".
Well, you can't make wine out of sour grapes, but you can whine with sour grapes.
Games? I think I explained rather well my poetic license by this post, without any malice or intent to do harm, no proclivity for mayhem; it was expressionistic, comparative in nature to the feeling many of us get about any significant purchase where the attraction trumps the actual value as may be stated in a simpleton's "Blue Book". But the post itself was like the magician that says "guess what card I am holding" begging for the entertaining answers. I think it went rather nicely.
Thank you for your honesty. By your saying you would say "nice gun, good job" is in all essence admission on your part that you do indeed agree it IS a "nice gun" and was a "good job" on my part. You only applied a sporadic and random caveat conjured from your angst and fermentation of your sour grapes, albeit having nothing to do with the fact that this Remington 81 is a "nice gun" and is furthermore a "good job".
Thank you. Again, I am glad you are impressed after all.
"Meh?" - OK, Cartman.
Thank you. Again, I am glad I was able to impress you after all.
Well, you see "taunting" from a cynics' point of view, and I see tantalizing from the "...guess what card I am holding?" conundrum, a fun pondering for eventual escape exhibiting my hand at The Pledge, the Turn and the Prestige, the prop set in motion being a firearm, something we can all enjoy considering this is a firearms enthusiast website.
But, granted, I must give you one allowance that was quite likely uncouth on my part and a little boorish; I was such a cad as to take lackluster photos, where I do see how you could be so easily fooled that the bluing is not original, all encouraged by my egregious ham-fisting with a camera.
Therefore, to do my penance properly, I have taken a few more photos of the Remington 81 in question. Now unfortunately, the maid's mother died last week, and I had to let her go. Fired. To think she would request time off from cleaning my house to go to her mother's funeral.... so selfish of her.
She left the place a cluttered mess. Please excuse the chaotic atmospheric conditions within the photos and enjoy. I hope I caught the gun at better angles this time.
So you admit you are not being civil? That would make YOU the troll, does it not? And I'm lucky more people didn't play the "Fox and the Grapes" card? Seems like you were the only one. Enjoy the photos.Like his post was? He had to try very hard to write that first post without telling us what he got. That was trollish. To the Nth degree. That annoys the heck out of me. So he gets a barely civil response. He is lucky more people didn't whip out the barbeque sauce and roast him for that kind of behavior.
And "cool story bro". But that's all you have now isn't it? I have this rifle... you have a cool story. I am impressed by your story. A little sour, but impressive.
