    Range Report AR15 ;)

I was at Lindens range today with my Type 56 Factory 26 SKS made 1964 and Mosin M44 when a guy next to me pulls up with a AR15....... I kid you not after the first round it jammed. LOL!!!!.

I heard him say next to me " Damn my AR is jammed" and backs up with a puzzled face. He stands for about 5 minutes and says i guess i have to put it away. He comes up next to me and ask if i had a shell extractor. The fancy one you have to load into your chamber with. I said "No but i have a cleaning rod you can shove down there". So i went to my SKS and pulled out the rod and slammed it home free lol. Man what a good labor day weekend today.

last time i was at the range a guy with his AR jammed it so good because he forgot to lube it up and ran it dry the RO took a look at it and said damn thats a good jam and had to take it in the office and have a couple other guys help him.

love that you found a legitimate use for a steel cleaning rod though, i wouldn't stick one of mine down a muzzle unless it was a last resort

the cleaning rod for a 7.62 weapon fit inside a 5.56 bore?

It's the rod - Not the brush.

yep and the vast majority of cleaning rods be it OEM or otherwise will fit down .22 and larger cal rifles. i have no doubt the rod fit down the bbl. its large size probably helped with getting the broken/stuck/whatever round out of the thing.

I have 3 AR and they are reliable. I have owned SKS's and they have jammed. Everything Jams even Glocks and AK's. Having a broken shell like that is more of an ammunition failure then the rifle it's self. In my Humble opinion AR 15's with the right ammunition and optic dominate the modern battle field.

I don't understand how a cleaning rod could substitute for a broken shell extractor. So, there was, in fact, no case head separation, only a stuck casing in the chamber? Sounds like lack of maintenance and ammunition malfunction, not the fault of the rifle. Steel case ammo?

Anyway, glad you got to the range, and kudos for helping out a fellow shooter.

Sounds like he had a failure to extract.

with a factory mag my Yugo SKS has never jammed once. with Tapco mags i have had situations where i had i hit the bolt carrier handle after releasing it to get the first round to chamber but it operates flawless after that.

i don't own any AR's so i don't know them that intimately but in all my time i've spent at ranges AR's are the only rifles i've seen on the range that commonly have problems. sure it can be many things that can be the cause of the problem but the simple fact is their design lends itself to fail when conditions are not optimal whether that is a part in the rifle that is out of spec or cheap ammo, it happens fairly easy from what i've seen.

as far as reliability goes its common knowledge that the AK and even SKS pattern rifles while not as accurate as most AR patterns are more reliable simply due to their designs that are made to work with sloppy tolerances and bad conditions.

having said this i still want and intend to build/buy an AR in the near future. they are great rifles.

Right. But the shooter asking for a shell extractor would have had a case head separation. As in, the base of the cartridge separates from the body, leaving it in the chamber. A cleaning rod, by itself, generally wouldn't do any good.

Unless I'm fundamentally misunderstanding something here. Wouldn't be the first time.

I dont know what happened since i am not AR expert but i seen the casing in the chamber when he pulled the bolt back. I was LOL Im like This guy was really asking me for one of these? I have a SKS......
Reliability FTW. The case was jammed in there. He was using some sort of brass ammo.

I think most of the AR 15 problems come from lack of cleaning. They clean the bore but don't take the bolt apart. The AR 15 is a very tight tolerance and because of that is very very accurate. Not to mention the Ergo it's the best in the world hands down.

Ok, if you saw the head of the case, then a shell extractor would have been useless, and the cleaning rod is good to go. Thanks for clearing up my confusion.

But you also have SKS accuracy. At even 200 meters you would have a hard time hitting someone that is in the prone, at 400 meters the round would have a hard time hitting even a man size target, this is why the AK 74 and 5.45x39 came into play. When it comes to making the shot, no other rifle can put people down like the M-16AR . A Marine with his M-16 and ACOG can put rounds on target out to 600 meters with no problem.
