Garand question

I do not own a Garand, I am asking about a photograph and potential purchase.

There is a scalloped shaped notched at 7 oclock on the ramp to the chamber. I think this is normal and part of the design.
But...
There is a micro crack from the scallop shape to the first angle to the chamber.

Question...
Would this indicate a stress fracture from modern ammunition?

i have heard using hot ammo in a garand would potentially lead to problems with the heel of the receiver & op rod.

The barrel on the M1 Garand can shoot all SAAMI 30-06 ammunition. The concern is with the operating rod and the heel of the receiver if it's old enough.

A crack in the barrel is probably just a defect or age related failure. Either way the barrel is toast. You'll want to also inspect the receiver once the barrel is off to make sure the receiver isn't cracked as well.

You should not shoot all SAAMI rated ammunition in the Garand unless you have an adjustable gas cylinder and tune it to the ammunition you are using.

The Garand was designed to shoot and function with ammunition loaded with medium burning powder in the 4895 range of speed. Many of the current loadings for the 30/06 may be using powders in the slower burning speed range, especially with the heavier bullets.

Shooting the Garand with slower burning powders have higher port pressures and can lead to a bent or broken op rod/ cracked receiver heel.

Port pressure is important with the Garand. Federal loads an American Eagle brand of ammunition that is loaded for the Garand.

The scallop cut is normal but there shouldn't be a crack.

^^^ Chamber should look like picture above. It shouldn't have any cracks on the feed ramp or any part of the chamber face. Try wiping it away it doesn't wipe away then stay way.

Go with what Milsurp Collector say cmp all the way. They never let me down.

Turns out, it is a crack, on closer inspection.

I think I'll go the CMP route.

I don't believe the 7.62 Nato insert is visible at the rear of the chamber, if that's what you are asking. It's in the front of the chamber not full length.
