Fun at the range with milsurps

Went to the range a week ago with my Garand and K31. Interestingly, the first 4 or 5 shots out of each rifle were my best, and things went kinda downhill from there.

Here are the first four shots with the Garand @ 100 yards. Ammo was Danish milsurp M2 ball:

And here are the first four from the K31, with GP11 ammo (also @ 100 yards):

(and the camera is a cheapie Olympus Camedia 3.0 megapixel)

Overall the K31 was more consistent than the M1. The Garand's groups opened up noticeably as the barrel heated up.

So, anyone else want to share their milsurp range fun?

    Regards,
    -Jack

How the **** did you get that group out of a M1? That is impressive. What are the specs on that rifle? It's got a heavy Krieger barrel in .308 right?

open sights? or scope? those are some pretty tight groups for 100yds from a milsurp open sights. Good work though.

That has to be with a scope. The whole target is black. Not a good sight picture for iron sights.

But that's still dang good shooting.

Jack Straw from Wichita, (M1) check your front handguard and make sure it's loose and wiggles

Looks like there are a few questions, so I'll answer them as best I can:

Yes, both rifles are scoped. The K31 has a Darrell's Scout mount and a Burris handgun scope. The M1 has an S&K mount and a Bushnell Elite 3-9x. I guess I should have mentioned that, huh?

The M1 handguard is loose and wiggly.

Re M1 specs: bought it at a gun show about 10 years ago. The previous owner replaced the stock with a Ramline synthetic, and the GI barrel was replaced with some sort of 6-groove aftermarket barrel. There are no markings on the barrel, so I have no idea where it's from. The barrel is parkerized, if that's any help. Receiver is a 1942 Springfield Armory. Other than adding the scope, I've made no mods to the rifle. Yes, it's still .30-06.

Thanks for the compliments. It was definintely one of my better days.

If anyone else has targets to share, feel free.

Those are still very tight groups for surplus rifles IMHO. real good shooting. you need to ditch that ramline and put on some walnut or the garand fairy will steal you're ammo!

The action might have set after a few shots on your M1. Post your results next time you go to the range with it.

I wish I knew what that means. Care to explain?

Just saying it takes a few rounds to "get things going" from going from a cold clean bore and then one that's been fired a few times. Did your groups just open on you?

I must put a scope on my K31. And I must get an M1.
