    C&R convert - '51 Russian SKS

A few years ago, I caught the handgun bug. I grew up shooting rifles and shotguns in Kansas, but after moving out to Orange County, my recent interest was solely in handguns, for whatever reason. Some friends and I decided to go camping out near Lytle Creek over Memorial Day weekend. We camped Friday night and went to the range on Saturday. My friends brought along an Enfield and an SKS, among other things. I had so much fun shooting rifles again that within 48 hours of coming back from Lytle creek, I became the proud owner of this '51 Russian SKS! It's a factory refurb with all matching numbers (even the stock - doesn't have the normal XXX's over the old numbers that you would see on a refurb, apparently). She's a really clean gun, and I can't wait to take her out.

I have no doubt that this is just the beginning of a long and beautiful love affair with C&R rifles.

A question for you gentlemen with more experience firing the 7.62x39 cartridge:

Do you have any favorite brands of ammunition? If so, where is the best place to buy it?

    Thanks!

For that matter, does anyone know why the stock has only the new numbers on it? It doesn't have any of the other factory marks on the stock that would prove it to be a non-refurb, but it also doesn't have the XXX-ed out old numbers. It also has the black bolt carrier, which seems to prove that it's a refurb. It's all a bit of a mystery to me.

I have tried several brands with my SKS and they all worked and grouped similar. One day i tried 4 different brands side by side and they all worked the same. I have found that sometimes, the gun does not like the first round to be hollow point ammo. If I load one FMJ on the stripper clip first, then no problem.
Now, I just shoot FMJ ammo.
I just buy whats cheapest now.

Yup, just look for the best price for this gun. Mil Surp will work just fine. Nice pick up and welcome to the club.
        Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

CTD has some non-corrosive that is 3.95/box of 20. I bought a about 500 rounds of it & it shoots really good. Cheaper than Wolf... which is another good brand. Both are Bi-Metal, but no steel penetrators.

yep, SKS's, especially Russian, don't seem to care what ammo you put through them. some people don't like wolf, or certain kinds of wolf, but mine doesn't seem to care. probably put 1000 or so through it so far without a hiccup. use whatever you can get cheap and enjoy the hell out of it!

                        Russian

Great looking gun!!!!!! Buddy of mine bought an old, beater SKS from a neighbor and we took it shooting. Gun was a blast to shoot and I was hooked.

My first was a Yugo which I really like, though it is a bit heavy. Just recently got a Russian and I like it a lot better, not that I dislike the Yugo. They are just different.

Both of them have eaten anything I've fed them with no hiccups. All I shoot in 7.62X39 is cheap stuff from gun shows or Ammo Brothers.

Welcome to the expensive world of C&R collecting.

All of my SKS's will eat anything. I think my favoriate load was the Chicom stuff my Dad brought back in 1970. Still have about 100 rounds left (out of 350...).

Otherwise, any good priced milsurp stuff will do.

                          Congratulations!
