    no serial number c&r question

so i have a marlin 81 dl. these were made before marlin stamped serial*numbers on these rifles. how do i know if it qualifies as a c&r? and if it does qualify, can i sell it directly to and ship directly to a c&r license holder? also can i sell it ftf to a non c&r holder if i get a copy of their california i.d? i know these are basic questions that are probably answered elsewhere, but the language can get so confusing. i am hoping for simple answers.

incidently the 81dl is a tube fed bolt action. btw many tube fed mags hold more than 10 rounds. do they need to be plugged, or are they fine?

Hi Cap Bolt Action! I'd keep it!

      IDK...
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

They didn't have to put serial numbers on before 1968; as per the GCA of 1968.

I found some info and it seems that they made the M. 81 DL between 1940 and 1965. But, with out serial numbers I don't know how to date it. Would I worry about selling it as a C&R; NO.

Tube fed loading devises are exempt from the 10 round limit.
        Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

anybody else weigh in on this? i dont want to do something illegal, but i dont know if the onus is on me to prove the date of manufacture or on a potential prosecutor to prove the date of manufacture. all i can find says that it may or may not be a legal c&r, but no way to prove it either way........?

Without a serial number there is no way to pin down a date of manufacture.

I don't know Marlins, but it may have a date of manufacture code on it somewhere (many Savage and Remington .22s do). You need to ask on a Marlin-specific website (there is probably one for Marlin collectors, but I don't know it. One place might be the Marlin forum on www.rimfirecentral.com

I recently found out that a Savage 4M .22WRM bolt action I'm going to sell for parts is NOT C&R because it has a date code for 1964 on it. Bummer; selling "parts guns" in CA isn't really worth it unless they are C&R; too many added costs. So another gun leaves CA....

Nope. No date. I have had it completely apart.

There may not be any obvious date marked, but there may be a series of numbers and or letters that would indicate time of manufacture like Mike A was suggesting. For example I have a Remington 511 that has no serial number, but it is stamped AUU where the barrel meets the receiver. According to Remington's records (I sent them a letter) and online research (http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/...ns/barrelcodes) I have learned that my rifle was made in March 1949.
