I put sixty rounds through my m44 the first time out. I had a pad on order the next week. The pad makes it truly an enjoyable experience to shoot and you still get the big flash and bang.

The M44 was my first Milsurp rifle.

I absolutely love that little beast and would go out camping in the desert with a bunch of buddies and we'd sit there for hours and hours and hammer the hillside.

I learned the hard way to shoot it first. I don't really notice the recoil very much at first. But if I come back to it later in the day and start to shoot it again Yikes! All of the sudden it's not so comfortable.

Man guns first, then the girlie guns like an AR later in the day

I don't have an m44 but I have a 91/30 and I've shot upwards of 80 rounds at a time with no pad, no bruises next day either. It's not that bad.

They have a hefty kick, I wouldn't mind getting a pad for mine.

It kicks, so I've used both a slip-on recoil pad, and now a rubber screw-on recoil pad (http://tickbitesupply.com/mos.html) to make shooting it much more enjoyable. Unless you like getting pounded in the shoulder, I'd recommend some sort of recoil pad. Remember, the Russians had thick clothing that helped cushion the blow.

How did you get that to stay on the butt? Or do the "wings" help?

The recoil pad is not required,(I have shot plenty times and rounds without it), but I will say it is a nice luxury if you intend to shoot 50-150 rounds in a day. The plus side is it adds about 1.5" to the stock, for me that is a bonus(I am not tall or long armed but the factory stock is short), this makes up for that big time!

One more thing, those "recoil pads" that are for sale....do very little for recoil. They are pretty hard(not like modern recoil pads for most rifles.)

The biggest thing they do is disable the sharp steel buttplate that the Mosins come with.
I think that is the real reason Mosins have such a bad rep for recoil, the sharp buttplate not as much as the recoil!

I have never shot a Mosin before and I did notice there is no pad on the end of the stock. Is the kick enough that I should get a buttstock pad or am I just being a little girl

Little girl. I've never shot an M44 with a pad. They kick less than the m91/30s anyways.

I try to shoot 45-105 rounds through my M44 each time out. Standing no problem. Put that thing on a rest and good luck, my brother in laws shoulder actually started to bleed. LOL!!

finally took it out to shoot, 20 rounds from the bench and I was done, call me a wimp but I'm getting a recoil pad. This thing is a blast to shoot
