How is "Garand" pronounced?

It looks like Guh-rand, but I've also heard Gare-ant or Gare-and.
I searched these forums. No hits.

What I've always heard is that the inventor's name is correctly pronounced John C. "Gare-und" but the Rifle is the M1 "Guh-RAND."

I too have heard the correct pronunciation of Garrand's name has the emphasis on the GARR'-and. But I just have a hard time calling the rifle anything but garr-AND' - just because I heard it called that for many years before hearing the correct pronunciation.........

The family name is pronounced "GARE-end". Another pronunciation may be acceptable to Mr. Merriam and Mr. Webster, but are technically incorrect since the rifle was named after the surname of the man who invented it.

Well then that's probably be the Canadian pronunciation.

Yeah, and former Redskins QB and current color man Joe Theisman's name is really supposed to be "These-man" but Notre Dame publicized it as "Thighs-man" to rhyme with Heisman as in the Trophy when he was up for it, and it stuck, even though it's wrong.

I always say and hear guh-RAND, FWIW.
