I haven't seen or heard of a decent Garand from big 5. I understand Century bought them from a country south of our border.

Big 5 K98 Mausers

Nothing personal but not entirely true. Fourteen years ago I found a nice K98k at the Big 5 in Hemet and recently found a perfect bore Mosin at Big 5 in Perris and bought it. It makes a difference to take a good look at what they have. True, some of it is junk but not all of it. Some of the 24/47 Mausers I recently looked at were pretty decent.
If you know where some of the best C&R's are at please share the source with us.
Still wish I had my K98k.

Like I said it was before I new about the CMP and I wanted an M1 Garand really badly! haha.
Yeah I got a really nice 1927 ex dragoon m91/30 from Big 5 while they were on sale. So sometimes its good, other times its crap, just depends.-General George S. Patton Jr.

I too don't want to take this thread to off-topic, but I'm with you on Big5.
I went into the local store (Burbank, KA) a while back and wanted to look at a rifle. Waited and waited and waited for somebody to help me. A younger guy said "I'll be right with you man" and wandered off. After another 15 minutes of waiting at the counter I see him joking around with a few other employees and say "excuse me - can I get some help?!?".
He saunters over and says "you got a problem man?". Yea... I want to look at a rifle here, I have an arm load of stuff I'm ready to buy, the place is like a graveyard so I know you are not busy and you can't even be bothered to help me out!
He takes the "Yo Man, I'm gonna kick you @ss stance" and says "I was gettin' to ya". I said ya know - never mind - this place is a dump and the employees are clowns - I'm not coming back here anymore.
As I leave and get out to my truck I look back and see he and a few of his friends are standing outside "mad dogging" me. I tell the folks I'm with that I'll be right back and walk over. He says "Yo man, you'd better watch your back, if I see you on the street I'm gonna kick your @ss!". What?!?!? Are you kidding me??? I almost burst into laughter! I stood around almost 30 minutes waiting for some service, had an arm full of things I was going to buy and now somehow this has turned into a "rumble"? Really? hahahahahah
I said a few not so kind words to him, making sure to get well within his comfort zone so he knew I was not kidding or backing down, and said my goodbyes. I called the store later and talked the a "Manager" who said he was aware of the incident and the employee had told him I had said some racist things to him that's why he wouldn't help me. Wow... the race card.
I will never, ever, no matter what, ever do any business with any Big5 on the planet. What a dump of a place and what clowns they have working there.
Sorry for hijacking the thread but I just had to rant a bit...
Now back to our normally scheduled programing.sigpicComment

I saw one of these 98s yesterday; it had black paint all over and the wood felt very light and plasticky.
But it did have a 41 bnz receiver...still not worth the price.
Usually, they sell OK guns. I saw this very nice Yugo Mauser there yesterday, one of those M-24/??s, but it wasn't on sale. Very nice, clean gun though.
The carbines (m-1) I usually see there suck; they're always beat to hell.sigpic

If the CMP didn't take them then they would have to have been imported by a licensed importer instead of the U.S. Army just returning them to the U.S. as government property. That means they would get an import mark.__________________

Yeah I guess your right but I don't see the CMP rejecting any rifle and part, anything they could sell for at least $1, Pretty sure they would keep it.
From what I understand most of the M1 Carbines and M1 Garands Big 5 gets are from South America, or was it South Africa, I can't remember.-General George S. Patton Jr.

they're coming in from places in South America like Guatemala and Ecuador. they are beat to **** and were not taken care of. they are also very overpriced.Comment

Yes I know this. Cheaper then what I saw at gunshows and I had no clue about the CMP when I got mine. I don't regret it because I didn't know better and it was fun fixing it up. If I would have know about the CMP I never would have bought it.-General George S. Patton Jr.
