Big 5 K98 Mausers

My local Big 5 has two K98's "on sale" for $399. I looked at them today (1940 and 1943) and was a tad disappointed. Imported by that outfit in Redmond, WA, they are force electro-pencil matched to the butt stock number. Receiver, bolt, mag floor plate = nothing matches. The actions seemed good and not sloppy. Bores dark but may clean up. Rifling evident. No accessories. The manager said he'd let me head space them but I am wondering if it is really worth it. The electro-pencil work is terribly sloppy. Can I do better? I would really like to get a German K98 but at $400, plus all the other fees and taxes, it seems steep. I do not have a C&R but would be happy to do a FTF PPT in the LA area. Thanks

Unless it's a rare code, RC K98's can be had for $50-$100 cheaper than what Big 5 is asking.

not to high jack the thread but big5 can suck my butthole. they had a mp15-22 that my wife wanted to buy for herself. she had been shooting one of my AR's and really wanted a .22 replica. it should be noted that she hunts with me(deer-savage .270/bird-remington 870 in pink camo/home-kahr cw9)

they claimed that since she couldnt prove the gun was for her that they wouldnt sell it to her. it comes down to the fact shes a petite blonde who knew more about the gun then the assclown who worked there. and yes were seeking legal action.

They are imported by PW Arms and a Russian-captures. After WWII, Russia captured huge numbers of K98s. They re-arsenalled them and put them into storage ready for WWIII, or whatever event which required them to arm their populace. As part of the re-arsenal process, the rifles where stripped, refinished, and assembled with total disregard for matching up the serial #s. The cleaning rods and front sight hoods are very likely to be missing. The going rate is close to $350 online.

I have a friend who is about to sell a 1943 Mauser Oberndorf RC K98 with around 440 round of 8mm, to finance another project, but he's still trying to work out how to post photos on the For sale forum.

I was looking at one last weekend. Actually, the one I looked at wasn't too bad. I didn't like the new Serial number on the barrel but other than that, it was pretty nice!

The capture screws will probably not be on them either. Sounds like typical RC K98.

I agree. I've found a very nice Yugo k98 and a very very nice walnut stocked K31 Swiss at Big 5 a few years ago. I actually had ordered a K31 from a distributor with my C&R and ended up selling it and keeping the Big 5 one because it was so nice. They get whatever Century sends them - the good, the bad and the ugly. You just need to look and ask the manager if they have any others in the back. As long as they aren't busy, usually pull out several for me.

I got my First M1 Garand from Big 5 (Before I knew about the CMP) and when I took the stock off, Rust literally fell all over the place. It was in horrible condition, got some Mosins from them that were in great shape. So it just depends.
