    Cheapest C&R Ammo

I've been bitten by "the bug". I'm looking for something cheap to shoot using milsurp ammo since I don't reload.

Question, what is the cheapest ammo going and what rifle(s) use it. Also, if you have any links that would be great.

I guess I'll have to find a range to shoot "magnetic" bullets at, since the two ranges closest to me suck.

Do they? I was told no. Guess I was misinformed. Although I do know they only allow 2 rounds at a time in an SKS.

Good idea. I will be getting a Mosin at some point. Either M44 or M39 maybe. Is 7.62x54R the cheapest right now?

Right now I have rifles in 7.62x39 and 7.62x51.

Definately pick up a Mosin, but better yet, pick up a K98k RIGHT NOW.

AIM has them on the cheap, I guarantee you will not see them at the price they have in 6 months. 8mm milsurp is a tad bit more expensive and harder to find than 54r but it's still damn cheap and batches comes up at regular intervals.

That's good news about Chabot. My first time I went there I dind't take my Wolf ammo because I wasn't sure about their rules. Of course they didn't even charge me to shoot. I had to go back up to the rangemaster and ask if I paid him or not.

I would get a K98k from AIM but I haven't filed my C&R paperwork yet. Not sure if I want to spend all the money on a transfer for such a relatively cheap rifle. Time to get to work on my application.

So far the cheapest we have is 7.62x54R and 8mm Mauser. Anything else? Also for the bay area folk, is there anywhere to buy milsurp ammo locally?

I really want an M95 but the ammo doesn't seem to be too available. Big5 had them a few months ago.

Not sure what you mean but what happened was the guy gave me my target and some instructions. I walked back to my car to grab my guns then realized that I didn't pay. I went back up to him and asked if I was supposed to pay before or after I shoot.

That's where you put away the used targets.

                      Re:cheapest C&R Ammo

I've been wanting to buy a mosin-nagant 91/30 myself, probably gonna post a WTB add on the classified section soon.
If I buy one used I won't have to bother with any waiting periods (or so Admendment II said),Sweet!!
How does Wolf brand 7.62X54R ammo perform, also does anyone know if circle S shooting range (i think it's called that) in petaluma allow any steel core ammo to be used?

By the way this seems like a great forum,i'm glad i joined.
Nice to meet all of ya!

Welcome to the site from another newbie. You won't have to worry about waiting periods if you pick it up in person. If it has to be shipped to you, you will have to have an FFL dealer accept it and then do the paperwork and stuff.

Where can you find 8MM mauser surplus online?

Oh, ok. I remember seeing it. I threw my target in the trash when I was done, then saw that.

Other than online, where do people buy surplus ammo around the bay area?

Check out the prices on the surplus ammo- bulgarian and czech seems to be the most common now. They are a good bit cheaper than wolf. The copper washed bulgarian ammo seems a tad more consistent with the mosin nagants, based on the small sample of 6 or so that I have worked with. The lacquer coated Czech seems to have more trouble extracting on some, but not all nagants.

As for the nagants, Big 5 has them on sale fairly often for $89. But you do have the waiting period to deal with.
