I just shot a friend's 98 today, what a great rifle is all I can say. Not sure where he got it or even what type it is, but I'm definitely looking to pick up something like it in the future. Good luck!

What's the deal with Mitchell's?
I always hear **** about them. Are their rifles mechanically defective or something? Or is it their crookedness?sigpic

Thanks man yea ive learned alot in this past day about my bayonet and im enjoying the history of it. Well the 4 digit serial number on the knife doesnt match the number on the scabbard and I dont even see a number on the belt frog at all. But below the number on the scabbard has the letter "f"Nice bayonet! Definitely deserving of a rifle to keep it company.
245 was the Number Code for the firm, Jetter & Scheerer, a maker of surgical instruments in Tuttlingen. They made bayonets and military knives during both world wars. They are still in business today, under their commercial trademark Aesculap-Werke. The "S" denotes small arms and 36 is the year of manufacture.
Your bayonet appears to be in nice condition. Early Jetter & Scheerer bayonets are one of the less common and more desirable makers. Does the scabbard have the same maker code and serial number as the bayonet? Any markings on the reverse of the belt frog? If there's a mark, post what you can make out and I'll see if I can ID the maker for you.
However on the bottom side of the scabbard looks like a "cof" and "43" under thatComment

Mitchell's used to advertise their Yugo M48 Mausers as being from WWII and built in a factory that the Germans had constructed in occupied Yugoslavia. Their ads gave the impression that the M48 was an updated K98. Now they buy Russian capture K98s and pimp shine them up/restamp new serial numbers on the parts before selling them as original all matching rifles. Their rifles are perfectly safe to shoot and look really pretty.__________________

cof was the Letter Code identifying the firm Carl Eickhorn. Eickhorn made your scabbard in 1943.
There were three distinct maker marking systems used during the Third Reich Period: Number Codes were already in use and stayed until 1937. From 1937-40 most bayonet makers reverted to their commercial tradenames. Beginning in late 1940, a new system of Letter Codes was introduced and stayed in place for the War's duration.
The "f" is part of the serial number. German serial numbers went 1-9999, 1a-9999a, 1b-9999b and so on.Last edited by marysdad; 10-12-2010, 10:19 PM.Comment
