Look under the foam. There should be a manual, packing slip, certificate, and an en bloc clip.

      Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

I ordered mine through midway. If you buy the ammo from cmp, i don't believe you need the gas plug. (I'll let the experienced garand owners verify that for you though)

Unfortunately that will never happen, although the CMP is selling M14 parts kits.

I hope everyone realizes that CMP is not going to be selling rifles forever. Some day (soon) they will run out of military surplus rifles they can legally sell and this will all be just a memory of the good old days. They have run out of M1 carbines, M1903s, and M1917s, and some day the will run out of Garands. They won't be allowed to sell M14s or M16s, so when the Garands are gone that's it.

The primary mission of the CMP is to promote marksmanship training. Rifle sales are just a way of financing their primary activity. They know that some day the rifle well will run dry so they are building up an endowment to finance future marksmanship activities.

These are the good old days. Buy now before it's too late to do anything but kick yourself for snoozing.

I don't use an adjustable gas plug because I don't shoot commercial .30-06 ammo (it's too expensive). I use only surplus M2 ammo or my own handloads. If you don't reload and you are going to use commercial ammo then an adjustable gas plug is a good idea.

With all the people getting Garands, perhaps some of them for the first time, I feel the need to repost something I posted in another thread.

Nothing will spoil your fun faster than getting "Garand thumb", caused by the bolt slamming shut on your thumb (not my thumb, a web picture):

This is actually more likely to happen when you are playing with your unloaded M1. Without the friction of a loaded en bloc clip in the magazine, there is nothing to slow the bolt from snapping shut like a mousetrap. It is less likely to happen when you are actually loading your M1. Sometimes you even have to gently slap the op rod handle to get the bolt to close when the rifle is loaded.

Get into the habit of keeping the back edge of your right hand against the op rod handle as you are loading the en bloc clip so you can keep the op rod and bolt from springing forward on your thumb (not my hand, Box o' Truth's hand).

Same technique when you close the bolt on an unloaded rifle by depressing the follower.

                                See http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu62.htm
