    Mosin split cases

yesterday I took out my mosin and fireds it for the first time. I put 40 rounds thru it and it shoot nice even if my sholder does hurt. I did notice that on 2 or three cases were split is this something I should worry about or is it the surplus ammo that I have. just trying to keep it safe. Thanks for your help

Nothing to worry about. Mosin's are tanks and that is just the nature of shooting milsurp.

From what I have learned (not a expert/gunsmith) the only reason to worry is if its a split on the back end/primer pocket. I've had neck splits mid case splits of all kinds and havent received any gasses or molten cosmoline to the face.

i wouldn't say most times. i've fired thousands of rounds of surplus and never had a split case.

some types of surplus ammo are more prone to splitting. Bulgarian is the one i've heard the most cases of split shells.

I have had a few split cases when shooting my Mosin. I never had any problems.

I had that happen to me last weekend, no issue. I also had one that spit some gas back out at me. That case had some corrosion near the rim and had a minor blow out in that spot. Reminded me to Always check cartridges before firing!

+1. The action of a Mosin is one of the safest out there. If I HAD to experience a major kaboom, I'd choose a Mosin to do it.

what surplus are you shooting? i have several thousand rounds of the the ones that fac sold years ago. i would say 5 out of 10 will crack or split along the neck. in fact if i look at the before shooting them, i can tell what ones are going to split.

Even though I'm a Mosin fan, I have to disagree. While very strong, the Mosin lacks two critical safety features. A vent in the barrel shank for blown heads (like an Arisaka, among others), and a vent in the bolt head for blown primers (like an Enfield, among others).

I've had a couple of split cases with Russian ammo . . . they were split at the tip of the neck. I feel this is not a problematic situation that's where to propulsion belongs.

I would be concerned if your cases are split in the body and rear. . . be sure your headspace is correct. If you have excessive headspace, rear case splits can be problematic and unsafe.
