Agreed. I settled for a new upper last month thinking, "A Carbine will be my next purchase, they will still have some"......

Buy a barreled receiver, and rebuild it.

I got one of the last ones. It is an NPM rack grade, and a pretty good shooter, but very mixed parts. Ideal for my purposes but not too hot for a serious collector, I guess.

But as far as getting a carbine now, just hang out on the CMP forum and watch the "for sales." There are often a few selling there and they aren't priced too bad compared to the ones direct from CMP.

I too got one from amongst the last made available. It is pretty rough but not exactly a bucket of bolts. Mixed parts from Armory rebuilds are the order of the day. (Underwood receiver & barrel, Inland trigger group and Rock-Ola adjustable rear site) With a serial # in the 2.7 million range in was probably an early 1994 manufacture. The barrel date in fact is 4 - 44 which would put it at the end of the Underwood production runs based on what I've read.
Wear on the face of the hammer and the bolt are obvious but do not appear excessive. Edges of the operating rod and its mating surfaces in the receiver look pretty good. The gas piston operates freely.
The stock was cracked in two places. One of the cracks was adjacent to the recoil plate so I ordered a used stock from Cheaper than Dirt. It is in excellent condition. I'm off to the range Monday for the initial test firing.

                        Auto-Ordiance makes M1 Carbines.
They are not C&R and cost around $750.
