    Project guns

Type 99. Pretty much as issued at the moment, but here's the plan:

    1. Weatherby stock blank (at bottom)

    2. ER Shaw contour #5 barrel, 338-06 AI

    3. 20 MOA pitch rail

    Already got the optics

Questions? Comments? Some useful links would be appreciated.

if it is in as issued condition you would be better off finding an already sporterized rifle. I have a M-48 mauser receiver if you are interested, since you are in 29 palms.

otherwise You will be taking a 200-300 dollar rifle, spending 500-600 dollars in parts and labor, to end up with a $100 dollar gun.
the reason why I say this os search gunbroker for all the sporterized milsurp rifles on there where you can tell someone spent 200 or more on sporterizing a rifle yet it just lists over and over and over and over again

if you are decided to use an arisaka action here is an perfect one

I am not against sporterizing, I am against sporterizing good condition original rifles when there are so many that have been hacked up already. Build a custom sporter, but dont use a correct rifle.

For example I have 2 mosins that do not have stocks and are missing other parts. these two are canidates for a PE and PU scope mount. but my correct mosins are safwe as well

I fully agree with Noonanda. I have several Arisaka receivers/actions that could be donated for the cause of saving an intact rifle.

Sporterizing an intact T99 now is a bad idea. Got any pics?

Last ditch? If so, I wouldn't build anything out of it.

If it's an already sportered non-last ditch rifle I don't see why not.

yeah i'd definitely get an idea of what era it is. may need to do a hardness test if unsure but if it's an earlier one it shouldn't be an issue. i've wanted to do an arisaka sporter for a while, but i haven't finished my current projects yet. never could decide the right chambering either. anyway, good luck and i hope all goes well. should be a neat rifle when all's said and done.

                Turkish Mauser long rifle kit

I think the OP is requesting about other folks' project guns as well.

Here's a Turkish Mauser long rifle project. It's an unissued stock with nice striping which will need inletting and sculpting from the outside. I have two different bolts to choose from, a bent and a straight bolt. Since this project will produce a non authentic rifle, it sort of doesn't matter what I do to it.

I have choices. If I want to scope it, I can put on the bent bolt. The existing bore is OK, but I'm toying with putting on a brand new target barrel and contour the stock to fit the new barrel. If I don't scope it, I could put aperture sights on the rear and a nice thin blade sight on the front. I'd have an excellent barrel with iron sights and a very long sight radius. That's sort of attractive. I already have several period Turks, so with this one, the price is right for me to make a build. 8mm Mauser is a great round, so I'll keep the caliber.

I spent the better part of the summer getting all the small parts. The only parts that haven't arrived yet are stock take down discs. I'll hook them together with an annealed brass tube attached using a custom tool that chucks into a drill motor. I'll make the tool from an old spade bit. I grind it so it will roll the annealed brass over the stock discs.

I have had good luck with pine tar as a protectant and stain. I'll finish it with thinned boiled linseed oil.
