that "child" at the beginning got to me, I was going to overlook this thread giving you the benefit of the doubt but now I can see that he's right in that you consider anyone else (including people over the internet that you don't know) an idiot compared to you. You are putting yourself way above other people. Yes people own gauges, surprised that other people can own them and know how to use them too? or did bubba at the gun shop tell you that gauges are SUPER RARE and only delta forces use them? And you only make it more obvious in that you try to bring up re barreling firearms, attempting to insinuate that you, yourself, re barrel firearms and thus know more than anyone.

I can say for myself, that I come here to get away from trolls lurking in other forums/boards. It gets really frustrating. The rest of the people in this thread would have welcomed your post if it had only been worded differently, how about "just make sure you check them headspaces, wouldn't want a KB right? here's a link to some headspace gauges if you don't already have some in your cleaning/maintenance kit www.trollstrollingtrolls.com"

And what you said about him OBVIOUSLY being new to guns? It's obvious he knows MORE than most people because in his question he asks "maybe it will tighten up the headspace" instead of "You guys think I can put the whole new metal thingy on when it gets here?"

Hopefully you will take the couple of rants in this thread into consideration and lighten up. I apologize, but I don't come to calguns for trolls or elitists. This type of behavior should only be found on 4chan's weapon board, not here.

I'd rather buy gauges for a suspect rifle and have them handy for future rifles/projects then waste the money on a one time visit to the gunsmith. So what is wrong with him buying gauges?
      okiegauges.com

They're the coin-style gauges that don't require you to remove the extractor or anything, they're much better and faster to use than the classic headspace gauges shaped like a cartridge. I believe it's $30 for one, but only $50 for the set of three (last time I checked). <---this place only makes em for a few calibers (milsurp), but has free and FAST shipping.

PS- thanks for "getting my back," guys, I really didn't want this to turn into an argument (if you could call it that). The purpose of my post, mtngunr, wasn't to "impress" you as you seem to think, but simply to get you to stop trolling and stop responding to my threads because you have NOTHING to offer. Don't take the moral high ground here and act like you were looking out for my safety, because that's BS. So for the THIRD time, please STOP being a dumb **** and just don't even open a thread if you see the name "jr916" under the title. Why you insist upon replying to my posts is beyond me... it's a little sad, reminiscent of that loser kid who gets picked on and pushed around but still keeps trying to hang out with a group of kids that don't like him. Just STOP. I came to this forum to avoid people like you, and by your actions you do an injustice to all the calgunners on this site, so just... stop. I don't know what to say, I obviously can't make you stop, but just think of yourself as "that kid" next time and maybe the shame will be enough. And please, don't straight up call me a child, because I am clearly not a child, and that is a VERY childish thing to do. People like you are pathetic, just go away and let the rest of us learn and enjoy our hobby in peace.

jr916, just my $0.02, it's the internet, ignore it, don't let it give you an ulcer, life is too short. Get your rifle fixed, and go blow holes in stuff, you'll feel much better than taking it out on your keyboard. Always works for me.

These gauges are slick and simple, if you shoot Mosins, invest in a set, carry em in your pocket like change to the gunshows.

The coin gauges are brilliant. If I were to acquire such gauges, I think this would be the way to go.

I haven't worried about the headspace on my Mosins prior to firing them for several reasons: matched bolt numbers on higher-end exemplars, good bolt feedback, trustworthy sellers who fired the rifles. Lastly, covering the receiver with a sand bag when firing for the first time is a pretty safe way to get a few fired cases to inspect.

I can't imagine headspace would grow meaningfully over time, since, given the rimmed case, it's only factors such as mechanical wear and inelastic deformation of bolt/receiver that could increase headspace. I haven't heard of Mosin actions experiencing such, so I suspect they're plenty strong.

As for checking firing pin protrusion, and I don't know if this'll work for you guys, I drop trou and line up my barry soetoro along the firing pin. When I can just barely hit the wall (of the bolt face), I know it's good to go. If I can't touch the wall, worries over pierced primers cause shrinkage making it rather difficult to finish the job.

jr916, I have the Okie gauge too.
I got mine off a guy at Gunboards for $20 shipped. It's just a field and I really think that's all most people need.
A warning for any of you thinking of buying one of these: They are small enough to lose quite easily. They really work well though. Just the thing to take with you to Big 5 or a gunshow.

And honestly, you may never in your life come across a Mosin with excessive headspace. The peace of mind is well worth the investment though.

I'm just the type to be extra careful, especially with such an old rifle and one I wasn't familiar with... before buying the Mosin I researched them extensively and decided to order the headspace gauges AND a firing pin protrusion tool, and checked them both before firing the rifle... but D'OH the rifle came with a firing pin protrusion tool of course, so now I've got an extra one lying around (fortunately for Interloper)! I also figured I'd be able to take the field gauge to gun shops and shows when looking for Mosins, as I plan to expand my collection much further. I agree that it's a small price to pay for the peace of mind it provides, and you can even charge the other "new Mosin guy" at the range a few mags of ammo to check his headspace for him!

Don't you mean 2 trillion Zimbabwean pence? Or is $0.02 up to 3 trillion now?

Jr, i just bought a Bolt Head/Extractor from buymilsurp.com to replace a worn extractor that i tried fixing by sanding (thought it had uneven wear and a few burrs on it).

Anyways, it works great and cycles and extracts rounds flawlessly. It looks like it was taken directly from a refurbished Mosin that was parted out as it had lots of cosmoline on it. Buymilsurp.com shipped fast as i believe i ordered on friday and got it today. I hope you get the same results as i did!

I'm satisfied with my purchase... it didn't come with a bolt head but oh well, I don't need one. When I "tapped" (read: hammered with all my might) in the new extractor, it wouldn't go in all the way and wasn't completely flush with the back of the bolt head. It extracted rounds beautifully, but since it stuck out a little in the back it also caused the bolt head to be slightly farther forward than it used to be, altering the headspace. So I just took some 220/440 grit sandpaper on a flat block and sanded the surface flush... now it seems to function perfectly and headspace is unaffected. I'll be testing it out at the range tomorrow along with some new stripper clips and my newly-floated barrel, can't wait!

I've got an M91 that needs an extractor too, so I'm glad to hear it was successful... I plan on ordering one soon.

So now that you have replaced an extractor, do you think it might have went in easier if you had pressed it in with a hydraulic press? I have access to one and I'm thinking maybe I will try that instead of the hammer

Some are easier than others I guess... Mine just happened to be really tough to get in with a mallet and steel punch.

It's a little harder to close the bolt on a round now, which I'm assuming is because the new extractor is stiffer. Just to clarify, when the extractor engages the rim of a cartridge, does it push sideways on the rim, or is it supposed to slip all the way over the rim and pull downward on the inside of the rim? Sorry if that's confusing, I'm just worried my new extractor isn't reaching far enough out, as it seems to be only grabbing the side of the rim instead of moving all the way over the rim's edge/lip. I thought if this was incorrect, it might have something to do with the increased pressure required to chamber a round (b/c the extractor would be bending more than normal). Am I being paranoid? Will it just take time and loading a few rounds before the extractor is broken in? Thx

Are you loading out of the magazine? I've noticed when I try to chamber a round by hand, when I close the bolt, the extractor sometimes doesn't like it and stays on the side of the rim, so I've pretty much decided to only load from the magazine now.

Eh, the extractor is staying on the side of the rims even when I'm feeding out of the magazine... it seems to be extracting them fine and sending the cartridges off to the side like normal, but its not slipping over the rim's edge. Is there any reason this is bad? Will it cause the extractor to wear out faster due to being bent more each time? Should I try to tap it in a little more? It's slipping past the edge of the rims about half the time, and the other half it stays on the side.

I snapped a picture of my M27 with a snap cap so you can see what this one looks like. I measured from the rim of the bolthead to the end of the extractor and it's .060" out from the rim. Hope that helps.

The business end of the extractor should stick out past the bolt face lip about 2mm, with the rear flush with the rear of the bolt head.
With the bolt assembled and out of the gun, stick a round under the extractor lip, and flush on the bolt face.
The extractor lip should be flush on the case rim, with slight pressure on the case wall. Does that make sense?
The extractor should hold a loaded round snugly in the bolt face.
Here's a good "how to" remove and replace an extractor. Figures 12 & 13, and 28-31:
