    broken extractor

I'm thoroughly pissed off, because after installing a trigger return spring on my Mosin Nagant 91/30 I reach over to grab the bolt and PRESTO! The extractor was just hanging off at an angle, and broke right off when I grabbed it lightly! I'm not sure how this happened... I've never had any extraction problems at all, and nothing forceful (or gentle for that matter) was being done to it at the time it broke, it was just sitting there!

I've just put in an order for a new extractor from buymilsurp.com, but that will take a week or so to get here. Can I fire the 91/30 without the extractor in the bolt head? If so, would I need to punch out the remaining piece of the broken extractor (the part that fits into the dovetail), or should I just leave it there until I get a replacement? Thanks

I've never tried it with a bolt action, but I have an obsolete semi auto with a broken extractor that I used to fire single shot. I don't see why you couldn't... I would take out the remaining pieces just because your going to have to anyways when you get your other one.

Weird. Obviously there's no connection between a trigger return spring and the extractor so it must have already been broken. That or you dropped it. Bummer dude.

I think it must've happened when I was bending/adjusting my trigger sear/spring the other night. It could've broken when I was rapidly working the bolt to make sure the trigger wouldn't go off (in case I'd made the pull too light). I still don't think I opened/closed the bolt hard enough to have broken anything, but the extractor must've been weakened already and I can't think of any other cause for the break. I just hope the new one comes in the mail before my birthday! And yikes, $30 shipped for a little extractor?? This Mosin and all my projects for it are starting to zap my pockets dry!

I already bought one for $18 but with shipping it came out to $30... Oh well, they're sending me an extractor on a bolt head so I can swap out bolt heads and see if it tightens up the headspace a bit.

And how are you going to measure that hopefully tighter headspace? And how about if it allows excessive headspace, a case seperates, and shoots a stream of steel particles and hot gas from the upper locking slot into your forehead if you are lucky, and your eyes if you are not? You measure headspace with gauges, and lacking gauges, you should not guess at headspace...a new bolt head might also alter firing pin protrusion and you can add the hazard of a perforated primer to the mix....

Once again, mtngunr, you manage to reply to one of my threads offering ZERO help and ERRONEOUSLY making assumptions about me and my abilities. How will I check that hopefully tighter headspace? Oh I don't know, maybe with the F*ING HEADSPACE GAUGES I have for this caliber. And what if it makes headspace excessive and shoots streams of particles into my face? HMMMM, well this scenario would never happen since I have GAUGES to check headspace. I said I would "swap out bolt heads and see if it tightens up headspace," what'd you think I was going to check that with, my pinky finger???

Oh no, it might alter firing pin protrusion??? Good thing I threw away my firing pin protrusion tool that came with the rifle, then! (not sure if your intelligence level allows you to detect that sarcasm, but there it is)

I would thank you for your concern if you were another member, however I honestly don't think you meant that post as cautionary advice. Once again you're the expert, and once again you have no idea what you're talking about, but you still write a post suggesting that I don't have any experience with firearms or that I don't have the intelligence to use them safely. I take offense to that, and for the SECOND time I must ask that you please not respond to ANY of my threads unless you have something useful or constructive to say. I couldn't care less if you respond to other members' questions on threads I started, because this is a place for all to learn, but please DO NOT respond to my posts anymore, as you seem to continue to do so based on erroneous assumptions. I have no doubt you are more experienced than me on many firearms topics, however you've not used this experience to help me in any way and you've been very troll-like in trying to start ***** with me even AFTER I told you not to respond to my posts.

PS-Sorry to the other members for this "outburst," but I feel it's more than justified. I've had a great time learning so much on calguns thus far, and every single person I've talked to on here has been immensely helpful and I'm very grateful... with the exception of this guy. I don't know what your deal is, but you need to get over it and stop replying to my threads treating me like a child. Scratch that, just stop altogether.

LOL. I was gonna offer to lend you my field gauge but I see you have that covered.
Still don't see how you could have broken it. Must have been ready to go all along.
In fact...it's pretty darned rare to hear of a broken Mosin extractor. Good thing it didn't break on young Ivan when he was defending Stalingrad or storming Berlin!

mighta been a little harsh on him jr, but i understand your frustration. for the most part, our members here are helpful, friendly folks, but there are a few that just feel the need to insult peoples' intelligence given the slightest opportunity. this group i believe consists of : A)people who are genuinely concerned for your health, well-being, and that of your particular firearm, but do not know how to properly express themselves so as not to be offensive, and B)people who probably know something, but think they know everything, including the ins and outs of your particular firearm despite the fact that they may or may not own one, possibly living in their mother's basement, and generally being miserable, unhappy souls. it's really a crapshoot but i usually don't care to find out which type it is, and therefore deal with this problem in similar fashion as you. don't apologize because *******s irritate you, they should be apologizing. enjoy your mosin, this problem shouldn't occur again in a long long time.

Child, every question I've seen you post has shown you are new to guns and saying anything after the fact to cover up your lack of knowledge...I suppose you bought a set of gauges just to check headspace on $99 rifles at Big Five, or perhaps you rebarrel guns too....you want to take offense at someone pointing out something a new gun owner wouldn't know, be my guest, but save your childish profanity laden responses for someone impressed by such.....

Wow this thread got interesting!!! Just curious Jr916...Where did you get you're "set of gauges just to check headspace on $99 rifles at big five" at? I'd eventually like to get some. Mtngunr there are a lot more mosins out there then the typical $99 91/30 and I'm sure there is more then enough people who buy head space gauges for them. I'd rather buy gauges for a suspect rifle and have them handy for future rifles/projects then waste the money on a one time visit to the gunsmith. So what is wrong with him buying gauges?
