Cosmoline removal

Just striped down my new Garand and had a question about removing the cosmoline.

Can I let the metal parts sit in an acetone bath overnight without hurting the parkerizing or should I just wait until tomorrow and use mineral spirits?

Just wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the sun for a few hours or on the dash of your car. Caution if you use your car dash wear gloves cause it will be hot as hell..... if you need more tips go to you tube and search cosmoline removal. Hope this helps

+1 for the Heat treatment in the plastic bag. heat gun also works well, a bunch of old cotton rags, and CLP should do the trick. Oh, and a 6 pack of beer.

I use a steam cleaner. Gets out all the cosmoline in the nooks and cranies that you normally wouldn't even see.

For a solvent, mineral spirits is cheap and works as good as anything --Actually diesel works well also, but needs to cleaned off afterwards. Well, it doesn't need to be removed if you like the smell of diesel ---- Acetone is too volatile and evaporates before softening cosmo -- my ha-penny

Hot water?

I use Gunk Engine Flush with a plastic-bristle brush or a toothbrush. It's a good bore cleaner as well, btw. Then, hot water for the rinse.

For the bore, bronze brush with kroil then rinse with hot water.

I made what is called per www.surplusrifle.com, the "EASY BAKE GARBAGE CAN OVEN." It works great. But I made it a bit more industrial stregnth. I learned that from Tim, on Tool Time. Seriously, it works wonders. No chemicals.

I just use WD-40, melts it off the metal parts pretty well.

lol, i never stripped down my 91/30 when i bought it last year. only took it out once and didn't shoot it much, so last time i put about 100+ rounds through it and the cosmo was boiling out of the stock forend and handguard. i'll have to sort this out. it was ugly.

Be careful with the chemicals you can ruin the wood.... Good old heat from the sun in a bag or the trash can method works well too. Hope you get her clean.

don't use cleanser on the wood

I wouldn't use solvent or cleaner on the wood. I used some citrus-based cleaner on the wood of a milisurp and the wood appeared to be refinished. When my SG garand comes, I plan to use the trashbag on the dash method to remove the cosmoline.
