British. Photos taken by a friend of mine currently serving out there in Operation Herrick. Looks like they were clearing the room of the rifles, as you can see there are less rifles on the ground as the pictures go on.

What I've heard regarding that is that the Russians have been selling their surplus WWII German captured weapons to Syria for use by their military (probably rear echelon, irregulars, ec., or for use by proxies), including MP-40s, StG-44s, K-98s, MG-42s, etc. Some of these weapons were in turn supplied to the insurgents in Iraq by the Syrian government. This is why there are so many StG-44s, K-98s, etc. around.

The Afghan copies are kinda neat. Some of the ornate ones are beautiful examples of folk art. My Grandfather brought this one back after his service in WWI...

Those guns don't deserve that fate. I hope none of them are actually antique, that's the stuff that boils my blood.

For those interested in this thread, my buddy is back from Afghanistan, and I finally managed to ask him what was the story with all the C&R rifles on page 1.

He said it was an arms cache they discovered south of Kandahar. Most of the rifles were British. Most were missing the bolts and they were all in bad shape. I asked what they did to them and he said, that they stacked them outside and poured tons of gasoline over them, then an American EOD guy threw a couple of phosporous grenades into the pile to set off the flames. He said the news crews loved it and made a big song and dance about the whole story.
