Ha ha. That is true. I think there are 2 differences between ammo and rifles.

    1. Ammo rush last year was crazy and I think there are many more ammo hos than gun hos. And if you have 1 gun and 2000 rounds then you have ammo for a long time. If you have 2 guns and 200 rounds then you have ammo for a short time and then 2 clubs. If you are going to load up on something, ammo seems like wiser choice if you want to fire your guns.
    2. I don't think there is a huge pent up demand for the Garands. I don't think fears of an Obama ban or anything like that is going to cause a big spike in demand. I think most of the Garand buyers are the same old buyers (for the most part) and we'll see people ordering one every 3-6-12 months to expand their collection. I really think a lot of the purchasing urgency is fake as it is probably the same group of us mil-surp collectors getting ourselves whipped into a frenzy about these hyped up rifles.

But who knows I could be wrong and the AF returns run out in August 2010.

I just wish that I would get my credit card dinged and my shipping e-mail... snif...

      The wait is killing me...
Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. The greatest Christmas gift I had ever received, or would ever receive. Gradually, I drifted off to sleep, pringing ducks on the wing and getting off spectacular hip shots.

        Update:

Just got my credit card dinged for the total amount of the 2 SA Service Grade Garands! Still do not have the e-mail, but I'll take the ding!

The wait, while still killing me, is much better right now.

Check the CMP e-store, it will have the serial numbers of your rifles and the tracking number of your shipment. It is important to know when the packages will be delivered so you can make sure you or an adult will be there to sign for them.

I checked out the e-store and no sn's yet assigned as the status is "opened." On the confirmation order it states that "- shipment should normally occur in 7-14 days."

I'll keep a look out for the sn's and send out updates as they happen.

            Cheers,
            Mike

                  Congratulations!

Before you open the boxes tomorrow, take a deep breath and remember the words of that wise philosopher:

"Getting rifles from the CMP is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

I will, milsurp collector. My gut is telling me that both will be real nice.

                    Breathe in and breathe out...

Now, all I need is ammo.

                      Guys,

Today is a GREAT day! Received my 2 SA Service Grade Garands this morning! I have not had a chance to do much with them as I have this pesky work thing going on...

However, both are late model production made somewhere in the 1954-1955 timeframe per the SN's. On one, the wood is almost perfect and on the second one, just some minor dings. On the almost perfect wood example, there is little signs of wear. It's been used for sure, but in pretty nice condition. Same with the other one with the exception of the gas tube which apears to have some of the parkarization removed.

Both rifles are solid examples, and I'm quite happy with both.

Now, I'm off to get some of the cosmoline off as both are quite lubed. Overall, very, very happy!

Finally, I will post some pics shortly so no need to give me the "this is worthless without pics..." as I'll be the first to do it!

                      LOL

Congratulations! A blow drier works great for removing cosmoline. Heat it up and it liquifies, then wipe it off with paper towels. Automotive brake cleaner spray works well for the nooks and crannies.

After you clean it I recommend coating the metal with Eezox http://www.eezox.com/gun-care.html It will make the metal look nice and is the best rust-preventative availble. Parkerization is designed to hold oil on the surface for rust prevention.

The gas cylinder, gas cylinder lock, and gas cylinder lock screw are stainless steel and can't be parkerized. It was a problem keeping them finished during World War II, because the black finish used then would come off and the shiny stainless steel gas cylinder really stood out in the jungles of the South Pacific.

There are several modern products available for blackening stainless Garand parts. I use Caswell Stainless Steel Blackener http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/black.htm#stainless

This Winchester gas cylinder had zero finish on it when I got it. I bead blasted it and then wiped on (not dipped) Caswell Stainless Steel Blackener

Thanks, Milsurp Collector. This is some great information! I plan on being intamate with my hair dryer as well as my oven as I plan on taking these babies apart and strarting the cleaning process after everyone's in bed. I'll be sure to snap a "before" and "after" the initial clean up pictures.

                          Again, great information! Thanks!

I just got my DBU email. They've slowed down a bit...it took 10 days from receiving my order to send me the email, and now they're quoting a 60-90 day delivery time. The order was sent 1/11, received 1/15, and email was sent this morning.
