    Help Me pick a K98

Hello Everyone, I'm buying a K98 off one of my buddies. He let me borrow 3 of them and I'm trying to find some info and advice to help me choose. It is my understanding that all 3 are Russian captures. I haven't had time to thoroughly look over them yet, but I don't believe any of the have any matching parts. (I'm a poor 25 year old...This will have to do. I don't have $2500 to spend on a 100% matching mauser.) I will try to describe the rifles as best as I can and will update this thread as I get more info on em. Thank you for helping me make the best decision. I will probably get all 3 to the range by this weekend to make my final decision.

Rifle's in order of how they appear in pics.

#1) "CE" on receiver with "43" below it. Has a sight hood and cleaning rod. "TG KNOX TN 98K 8MM Germany" below end of barrel. Has the waffenampt stamps with swastikas below them all over and near trigger on stock. Stock has the serial number on receiver on it. (So far the one I think I'm going to buy). Does not have an X on the receiver from what I can see. "brg" on butt plate

#2) "42" on receiver with "1940" below it. no sight hood or cleaning rod. "TG KNOX etc etc, same as other. has waffenampt stamps with swastikas below them. All parts are force matched to the receiver's serial number. Has an "X" on receiver.

#3) "EC" with a symbol next to it that says "dot 13". "dot" on receiver and "1944" below it. Parts are force matched to the receiver. Has the import stamp the other 2 have. I don't see any of the swastikas on this one. Has "x" on reciever.

Some of the pics came out kind of crappy. I'll try to take better ones soon.

I picked the 42-1942, my reason being? It was made in the Mauser Obendrof Factory in Berlin, it cant get any more Mauser then that. I love my Mausers, hope it works out for you bro! Also if you want a little more info on all of them hit up this site, it helped me choose the first Mauser that I bought...(Nothing beats one that your Opa served with)

Mauser's Oberndorf factory was located in the southwestern corner of Germany, near Stuttgart, about 362 miles from Berlin.

Mauser did have a factory near Berlin, Mauser Borsigwalde, that made K98k rifles. Those rifles were marked S/243, 243, or ar.
        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

well, actually Mauser in s. Western germany. Oberndorf is nearly as far away from Berlin as you can get and still be in the same country.

if it makes ya feel any better, I'm about as lost as you can get and still be on the same forum.

the '40 Oberndorf don't look too bad though.

Kinda of a coin toss between the 42 mark and CE mark

I've been leaning towards the "CE". It's the best looking of the rifles and in the best condition.

But keep in mind where they were made. Some of those rifles were made my prisoners, and laborers

Which one is the most desirable of the three as far as where it was made?

The CE42 has a peened receiver swastika. Receiver also looks ground down.

Not real thrilled with the receiver finish on the 42 1940.

Given the photos you have shownI would choose the dot 44.

I would want to see more close ups of the receiver and barrel shank markings before making a choice.

I like the cupped walnut stock on the top rifle in the first photo.

                        tim

By production numbers, none are particularly rare. Given the choice though, I'd take the ce 43.

Although I'll say I'd take the one with the best overall bore/crown.
