CMP Garand

Okay, so I've been thinking about buying a Garand and see that the CMP has service grade S.A.'s for $599. I'd love to be able to buy one locally, but everyone seems to be selling a CMP service grade for around a thousand bucks.
My question is this; Are the CMP rifles (direct from the CMP) that much inferior to the CMP ones that people are selling?

nope.

Basically you are paying for the priveledge of immediate gratification (not having to wait the 3-6 months), and not having to jump through the CMP hoops (as minimal as they are) if you buy a CMP rifle from a private party.

you will get hooked, I see CMP rifles at Gun Shows all the time for 1K plus for the same rifle - cleaned / dolled up to impress. Better to be patient and get it from CMP. Recommed you get this book and a few of the others to pass the time away, M1 Garand-M14 Shop Manual, by Jerry Kuhnhausen ( Fulton Armory ).

I have a M1 Garand, a M1 Carbine and a M1903A3 all from CMP and it was worth the wait to get them all. As far as I am concerned CMP is the way to go.

CMP sells M1 Carbines as well.
Bill Ricca sells re-prints of the old military shop manuals , plus parts, tools & gear. One of the most knowledgable Garand/ M1 Carbine guys in the world. He has been on the wrong end of a Garand ( RVN) .
The two best ( IMO ) first 2 books to buy:
" The M1 Carbine Owner's Guide " by Larry L. Ruth w/ Scott Duff.
" The M1 Garand Owner's Guide " by Scott A.Duff.

The ROKs plan to release around 640,000 US made Carbines over the next 10 years or so. That should stabilize prices. Great news for most of us.

Bad news for people who bought 10 CMP Carbines a year to sell at scalper prices later.

+1 to that. It astounds me that people will spend so much more rather than meet the CMP requirements. Go shooting and get the RO to sign your form. You are already at the range... yeesh. Or even shoot a match or just use a C&R if you have one. The other stuff like copy of passport and notary ($10 once every 3 years) are easy.

I think my second to last CMP gun is the nicest (HRA SG). But my latest purchase was the best deal-- SG Winchester Garand that looks a little rough but also came with Winchester stock and bbl and an uncot op rod. I hit the lottery on that one.

CMP is the best deal in town. Good prices , great customer service , and every dime of profit goes into into future support for shooting in the US.

I also have to admit that the Blue Sky M1 Carbine that I hand picked in New York ( Middletown/OrangeCounty/Newburgh area ) back in 1989 or so had some really beat-up wood. It had been re-parked in US. It turned out to be a very good shooter with a little work , but the stock was a total loss.
I'll post about another Blue Sky some other time.

Its not that hard, join a CMP-affiliated club like CRPA, http://www.crpa.org/ , do some shooting, get your order form notarized and send in the order with your $$$. Wait ~3 months for the Fedex driver to deliver your carbine to your door.
