    M1 garand ?

I sent my paper work into CMP last nov. for a service grade M1 and got my order in 1 day late(nov.22). now I am trying to decide if I should order a field grade greek issue for the time being. Can someone help me decide? are the field grades worth getting. I would like to have a good shooter. HELP!

Yep, they're worth it. I have 2 of them. I'm very happy with them.

YES! You might get lucky. I certainly did...arguably I got to hand pick at the Reno show-- But the metal, parts, finsih and Throat & muzzle wear all gaged BETTER than some of my service grades. The wood was....lacking but still better than the rackers.

Have NO fear of Field grades, especially if you dont mind working with wood or having only one, two or three parts worn (but still in spec).
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

          Question:
Did they get your order too late and tell you it was too late?
Or, did they receive your order and you are on the waitlist for a Service Grade?

If you really were too late, yes, change your order to a Field Grade, most of them are nice shooters and look nice too if you clean up or replace the stock.

If you are on the waitlist for a Service Grade..... cool.
Now if you can afford it, send in another order for a Field Grade Greek so you can have a Garand to shoot while you wait for the Service Grade.

My Field Grade Greek has really nice metal and should look great when I get around to replacing the stock with new walnut.

I am sure i will be very happy with it and that it will be in better shape than if it were WWII in field grade. that being said I am in to WWII rifles, I am trying to collect the whole set I guess I will have to go back and get another this one pre 1944

I have several field grades and several rack grades. They all were luck of the draw. Out of the dozen or so I have, I would say that even the luck of the draw field grades were satisfactory, although one gauged badly on ME. I have been purchasing them with the intent to refinish them, since the finish can be pretty bad. I've never seen signs of pitting, just thin finish. Stocks seem to be about a 50/50 proposition. I have been able to restore half of them, and the other half, while sound, when restored just seem to be not quite.

The Danish returns without wood are a favorite of mine. Save time by buying a new stock from CMP or Boyd's, and get a set of stock and handguard metal. I have only had one bad barrel on the Danish returns, and some were much better than expected. A couple gauged new.

A ONE LINE very simple note like "WWII rifle PLEASE" or "Good shooter" will usually produce results- even though thier official stance is they dont do requests....if its simple enough they seem to try; its worked for me on the two times I've done it and for others that have tried on Amback.

Just nothing toooo difficult/long like a "I want a 1942 in perfect shape on both ends, cartouched wood non re-import with at least 3 NM parts".....yeah I think they'll 'accidently' send you a racker LOL!!!!!!

My field grade was in good shape. The wood doesn't have too many dings, and it shoots great!

I got 8 field grade greeks, a couple of them had funky unfinished stocks, but the metal appeared to be completely virgin (wood had no dings either and it was rough unfinished - easy to ding) and I shot a group the size of a quarter at 50 yards with one. The rest had typical hardwood stocks that had seen some wear and tear, but all were in good shape.

I wonder if they had some unissued barreled receivers that they put on unfinished furniture they had stockpiled somewhere. Opening them was a fun doubletake: "wtf?!........whoah! Awesome."
