I imagine the cut was made by the GI that brought it home after WWII so it would fit in a duffle bag broken down. The real crime is losing the other pieces. I should try and find another Gew 98 stock. There have to be some out there. Probably cost more that I paid for the rifle however.

I'm sure I'm missing a few of the obscure ones.
And Spain ! (FR-7 and FR-8's) Converted from their old Mausers. Coolest Mauser-actioned rifles around.

What about hungarian? I just got my first C&R rifle today. Its an old 8mm mauser. It has "Budapest" stamped on top of the reciever. I know nothing about these rifles. This one looked in absolutely amazing shape. I assumed its from hungary. I got it for $79. I thought i got a good deal. Anyone have any input?

Be careful! It sounds like your rifle is not a Mauser at all and is really an M95 Steyr-Mannlicher. While a some of these were actually converted to 8mm Mauser in their final configuration, most of the ones you find will still be chambered in 8x56R. There are even a few around still chambered in the original 8x50R.

If you paid $79 for it I'd bet it was on of the M95 carbines in 8x56R that Big 5 used to sell.

Big 5 recently sold a ton of them. 79.95 on sale............They are not Mauser's but Steyrs. The 8X56R is a powerful round and the action is a little on the weak side. It was originally designed and built for the more moderate 8X50R as the previous poster said. The ones that I looked at were in great shape. Neat little rifle that has a reputation of kicking like hell. My wife liked them because she is Hungarian
